The Firebirds - S/Tdotdot
artworkThe Firebirds, Dutch purveyors of garage surf, have finally issued a whole CD, but alas it only contains three instros amidst a sea of garage vocals.
Picks: Slip Stream, Ali Baba, The Wipe Out

Track by Track Review

Slip Stream dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a Davie Allan tune, also issued as Jet Stream, among other titles. The Firebirds unusual approach to surf, now augmented with organ, brings this tune into uncharted territory, where its quirky side becomes the focus. This garage interpretation works pretty well.

Ali Baba dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dave and the Customs' "Ali Baba" is given the carport treatment, retaining the drama but losing the power in the murky mix. It's loud and aggressive, and well played, with big guitar action.

The Wipe Out dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

No, it's not the Surfaris' tune. "The Wipe Out" is a huge chord death on the waves kinda tune... lots of power with a dark and moody essence. Quite effective.
