artworkThis is much more charming and enjoyable than most releases of music using very simple riffs, in art because of interesting arranging, and also due to great drums and engaging rhythms. This release also sports a few vocals. Fun stuff.

Track by Track Review

Buen Viaje Fantasma dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Bongos and loungy vibes lure you into a false expectation, but are hard-segued into obscurity. "Buen Viaje Fantasma" is a fast rockin' number launch via drums and glissandos, and using pumping rhythm chords frequently double picked rapid guitar. A gutty garagy sound drives it home.

La Noche de la Barracuda dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great reverb and splash rumble beneath a melody that portrays resignation. Fuzz comes along for the break, and rock is the order of the day. Some very cool licks surprise, and overall, "La Noche de la Barracuda" is a darn cool track.

Chiquilladas dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dark and heavy circular riffs drive this rockabilly based number. Great drums, spunky energy, and a basic rock structure. The glissandos that run up and down the neck are pretty cool.

Tiki Twist dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a basic frat rockin' instro with great drums. The drums and the exuberance seem to carry it, 'cuz you won't whistling it anytime soon. Lots of energy here, without being overbearing.

Sirena dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Sirena" displays a balance of surf and lounge and exotic bongos. The ringing chords are charming, and the melody soothing. The MJQ vibes are really nice. An excellent softly understated number ready for a rainy afternoon.

Mambo en Mocambo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The enchanting rhythm of the mambo and the sultry ring of the tremolo chords create an emotional hook for the dry melody. The double picked adds a lot of charm as well. "Mambo en Mocambo" contains an interesting mix of sounds and ideas. Great drums, and a thorough wash of the sea.

El Extrato Caso D dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Rumbly and spiked with long leaning string bending echoed in the night, this minimalist riff based number develops quite a bit of charm. A bit of fuzz, some engaging chordage, tremolo throb, and you end up with what should be a pedestrian riff rocker that is nothing of the sort. About half way in, "El Extrato Caso D" devolves into a shimmering vibes number that's soulful and very cool.

Untitled dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This unlisted track runs at about 5:20 into the prior track. It's a repetitious riff rocker that features great drums and rhythm guitar, and tribal charm.
