Los Fenix - Los Fenix Vol. 2dotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a very cool obscurity with three frantic surf instros and one so-so vocal sung against a surf backtrack. I found this on the web, and was very pleased when it arrived. Now I have to find volume 1! Explore this pure vintage fun at will.
Picks: Dos Guitarras, Espejismo, Amelia

Dos Guitarras dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

There is some pretty fast picking here and there in "Dos Guitarras." The drums are a bit frantic at times, and the muted rhythm guitar is very crisp. The bass plays a Cossack line, and the chants of "hey" also convey that feeling. Pretty fun.

Espejismo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This cover of "Miserlou" is based loosely on Dick Dale's single, but is a bit slower and certainly less intense. While that's true enough, it's charm is in the stylistic contrast between surf lead and rock rhythm chords. The bass is quite right for the arrangement, and the occasional frantic tom tom rolls are too funny. A dribbling gliss here and there, and you're all done. Very different from other period versions.

Amelia dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

galloping rhythms and a fastish melody, with fine whammy chords and romping bass. I originally felt this was a three-star track, but it really grew on me. Very fun, played at the edge of their skill, and really honest.
