Docteur Legume et Les Surfwerks - La Planete Sauvage: 10 Songs About Sex and Psychopathydotdotdotdot
artworkLa Planete Sauvage: 10 Songs About Sex and Psychopathy is a very strong release. Lots to sink your teeth into, some serious, some flippant, and all well crafted. While very illusive in the US, I really like these guys!
Picks: Cheeky Blues, 2001: Cerveau Salade, Vixen Vampira, Der Trabant Twist, La Femme Electrique, Interstellar Penthouse, La Fin Absole Du Monde, Zombie Cricodile From Wha Dimension, Atom Tango, La Planete Sauvage

Track by Track Review

Cheeky Blues dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tweaky watery delayed electronics introduce this big twang guitar stinger. generally in the go-go whammy bar corral, "Cheeky Blues" features tortured guitar fronting a rock solid rhythm section. As the electronics pan about, the song comes to an end. Intense and fun.

2001: Cerveau Salade dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A spooky opening yields to intense spy twango with shimmering tremolo. "2001: Cerveau Salade" is big, fluid, and very strong. The melody is well crafted, and the arrangement rich. Excellent!

Vixen Vampira dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Liquid chords, dangerous curves, and drama haunt "Vixen Vampira." It's structured like classic spaghetti, sports intense tone, and flows in an undulating manner, all the while being nervously edgy and spooky. The Theremin creates a sci-fi feeling, while the muted surf guitar cries out for the curl. Really cool!

Der Trabant Twist dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Muted rhythm and long flowing whammy set against Theremin wailing with an undulating rhythm perfectly present this song. psychedelic espionage and surf form a compelling sound here. very cool!

La Femme Electrique dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

reverb, tremolo throb and whammy shimmer, muted emotion, Theremin siren calls... everything you need for a great adventure in sound. "La Femme Electrique" has all this and more. This is a very well crafted track.

Interstellar Penthouse dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Link Wray's "Rumble" provides the foundation for this liquid surf number with delightfully muted lines. Most songs that are obviously derivative of a classic don't really work, but this is the exception. Had Link been from Malibu in the sixties instead of North Carolina in the fifties, he might have sounded like this.

La Fin Absole Du Monde dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Loud and intense, with a soaring post surf howl. "La Fin Absole Du Monde" is an in your face sort of mid tempo number that doesn't let up from it's stinging whammy overdrive.

Zombie Cricodile From Wha Dimension dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

reminiscent of Eddie Angel, "Zombie Cricodile From Wha Dimension" is built on a post surf rock platform that straddles primitive fifties rock and tomorrow's intensity. Loud and powerful.

Atom Tango dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Swirly space sounds and liquid reverb in an almost island setting. Slow and powerful, with a sad edge and solid arrangement. Theremin and other electronics add sci-fi and disco weirdness to the mix. Think spies at Makaha on acid under a mirror ball.

La Planete Sauvage dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Almost soft, with long sustain and reverb. "La Planete Sauvage" has a lovely melody and cool muted bridges. very nice!
