The Dillengers - Instro-Maniadotdotdotdot
artworkThis may be an all-cover release, but the way the Dillengers go about it is fresh and very powerful. A ton of energy, plenty of grind, and surf lurking in every corner.

Track by Track Review

Dirtbag dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Grodie growly low brow tweakery abound in this minimalist grinder. Dirtbag speaks to the knuckle dragger in us all. With a fifties feel and a grumpy distorto-twang, this is just right for a hoedown at the lumber yard.

Penetration dotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Weird throbbing echo chords separate lines in this offbeat reincarnation of the Pyramid's classic. It has the warm familiarity, yet is so disturbed with such broad grins that it might as well be a new song. Very cool!

Goldfinger dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Warbled spies left in the cold, with trench coats opened for the ladies. It's warm, punchy, yet kinda strange. Original tweakery.

Rumble dotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

I was ready by the time Rumble came up. The demented guitar draws out the chords with warbly inverted stereo vibrato that makes it seem like it's meant for the asylum. Way cool!

Mr. Moto dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Paul Johnson's delicate surf classic is enlarged with surfable twango and punch. Warm and not too far from the Packards. A verse of The Munsters adds to the middle.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly dotdotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Monster distortion and compression, big drums, long sustained whammied chords grind this into a power magnet of intensity. Strong and able to wear you out.

Harlem Nocturne dotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Ultra rich vibrato chords lushly flow like huge ripples beneath the waves of edgy guitar. Punch, power, suave energy, and intense late night soul.

Jack The Ripper dotdotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Uncle Link's monster with feedback, howls, intense drive, and supercell menace. I can't think of another arrangement quite like this, but then Jack The Ripper is really hard to mess up. Glorious!

Apache dotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

The soft shimmer of vibrato throbs the dickens out of Apache. Powerful, dissonant, and big, yet subtle and refined. A slid and original rethink of Jerry Lordan's classic tune.

Surf-Spy Medley dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Pipeline surrounds A Shot In The Dark and James Bond with power, punch, and throb. Quite effective.

Sleepwalk dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

The long stroll at the end of the prom is liquefied in the shimmer of the guitar, while the military precision of the drums reminds you that control is just out of sight. Lots of slides and silken transitions.

The Magnificent Seven dotdotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Elmer Bernstein's classic film score (and theme for the Marlboro Man) gets splashed and double pick in low-E madness, which changes it from a twangster to a surf monster. Grumbly and very cool.

Rebel Rouser dotdotdot
Aggressive Surf (Instrumental)

Disturbed twangage and distortion reinterprets Duane Eddy's hit. Still sorta bouncy, but that circular basement guitar tone makes if off-balance cool.
