Sir Bald Diddley and the Wig Outs - Nitrous Peroxidedotdotdot
artworkThe latest CD from the UK's lo-fi King in waiting (for Billy Childish). Most of Baldy's instro writing is simple, direct, and just slightly beyond a mere progression. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and other times, it really rocks! This time out, Baldy has interleaved a half dozen garage vocals, which are neither remarkable nor memorable, unless you're really into neighborhood back room card den rock. I think that's too bad, because Baldy just got his "mix" to be consistent with the last CD, and his writing is getting better, and the band is sounding great as a surf band. In any event, the instros are worth the price of admission. Just press the SHOUTLESS button on your CD player, and everything will be fine and dandy!

Nitrous Peroxide dotdotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

This is a great surf track to open with. A simple melody and a nice arrangement support this cool tune. It is infectious in it's simplicity, and the highlight of the disc.

The Hooked Claw dotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

A slow tortured Link Wray-like tune with sorta almost but not quite a melody line and ominous tones.

Che Che Che dotdotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

Some one had to do it, and Baldy got elected. One of the rarer of the Astronauts tracks is a Japanese single called "Che Che Che" which the Boulder boys recorded during their hey day, and has been issued in two mixes or takes, one on vinyl in Japan, and one on CD recently. The Astros version is dry, light and quirky. Baldy, being no slouch and certainly no musical wimp, added a certain quantity of testosterone, and came up with a heavy, wet and almost whimsical arrangement that is mighty fine. hats off to Baldy - lest we think such behavior politically incorrect and insensitive towards a follicly challenged male.

J. A. T. O. dotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

A rapid fire number with lots of reverb and a nice melody line. Infectious.

The Ragin' Bull dotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

Fuzzy garage instro a la Link Wray.

Surfinia
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

A mid tempo cool tune with a curious melody that hooked me in. I hate it when that happens.

Comanche dotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

An overdone tune - nearly a lo-fi anthem. Billy the C has done it and done it, and so have every one of his minion bands, and every one is just as boring as the first. Sorry Baldy, but this tune is just not interesting. I suppose live it has the same sorta draw as Eddie Angel's (Los Straitjackets) "Cave Man," but I just don't find any of the charm of Eddie's tune in it, and certainly none of the humor. I'll pass.

Alopecia dotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

Rockabilly riffage in a wet suit.
