Los Derrumbes - Live (A Mind-Warping Instro-Surf Experience From Outer Space)dotdotdotdot
artworkWhile this is a somewhat muddy soundboard recording, meaning that it's mono with the guitars not really up front enough and too much drums, it's also a great performance full of fire and spunk. the best part is that it's a free download from Los Derrumbes website. Very fun!

Track by Track Review

Squad Car dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A rippin' delivery of Eddie and the Showmen's "Squad Car" opens the disc. This performance is fast and hard driving. A very traditional arrangement is used here.

A-Rab dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a hot performance of one of Jim Messina and the Jesters' more obscure singles. Fast, pounding, and full of fire. Egad!

Movin' dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Lee Hazelwood's "Movin'" is played with traditional style and quite a bit of spunk. It rocks with spirit and reverb.

Por Un Puntado dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great drums introduce this hard charging number. The guitars are fiery and the bass thunderous. "Por Un Puntado" is a fast track with a catchy riff and rhythmic nature.

Outer Limits dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a strait forward cover of the Mar-Kets' "Outer Limits." Well done, but without anything new happening. Yet, it's pretty darn satisfying because the performance is very good.

The Rumble dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Shadows' rompin' song "The Rumble" rips and bounces along. More loud than flighty, and quite cool.

No Tengo Tabla dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

In live performance, "No Tengo Tabla" is much surfier than the studio take. It rips with great abandon. Excellent!

Midnight Run dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a solid cover of the Super Stocks' ultra classic "Midnight Run." It's done with great reverence to the original, but with fire added. very cool!

Somo 5-0 dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Somo 5-0" is a basic riff rocker with reverb and splash, and a ton of energy. Machine gun glissandos and fiery drums and guitars! Yikes!

Goulash dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a tuff cover of the Intrepides' "Golash," with all the requisite splash and charm. great energy and power. The drummer goes nuts, and makes this more than just a cover. Excellent!

Black Sand Beach dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a rockin' cover of a Japanese classic, originally from Yuzo Kayama and the Launchers. The drums rock hard, and the guitars fire with high energy. Wow.

Pacifica dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This all to often covered Los Straitjackets song is very nicely done. The charm and splash are retained.

Buffalo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Buffalo" opens with a dynamite version of "Harlem Nocturne" based on the Viscounts killer single, but after one verse, Los Derrumbes launch into a rockin' romp with a great rolling drum beat. High energy fun and cowboy good times! Very fast and cool, with serious energy and rockin' drums.

MK-II dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Wonderful whammy chords and a down-on-the-docks feeling, amped with rockin' drums. "MK-II" is a very spunky track with no shortage of energy and fun.

Telstorm dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

I expected a cross between "Telstar" and one of the songs titled "Storm Surf," but alas this is quite original. Moody and dark, spunky and aggressive, with great whammy chords and rockin' drums.

The Whip dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"The Whip" rocks with Incredible drums, a solid riff, and a lot of energy. It catches you immediately and does not let go.

Corre Batman dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Link Wray and his Raymen's "Raw-Hide" is ripped and pounded. Great drums, fiery guitars, and verses from "Wipe Out" and "Batman" added. "Corre Batman" is kind of a medley workout.

Viva Las Vegas dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Talk about uplifting bounce. Los Derrumbes pump and grin thru "Viva Las Vegas" as if the are on their way to the slots right now. Great energy and spirit!
