The Daytonas - Ready Set Go!dotdotdot
artworkEarly works from Sweden's own surf band. Lars Kjellen, ex-Stomach Mouths provide some mighty vintage sounding surf & rod songs. Every 3rd song is a surf instro. This is a pretty cool CD. By the way, the last track runs on for a long time with surf sounds, then yields to 5 uncredited vocals of really cool proportion, sounding a bit like the Stomach Mouths. The sound is moderately listenable, but only of demo quality.
Picks: Geronimo, Go!, Hawaii Five-0, Surf Spot

Track by Track Review

Geronimo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The performance seems a bit tentative here, but there's no denying the spirit of the band. Jon & the Nightriders brought this to us, and the Daytonas continue the idea, with a warmer more swimming guitar tone. Excellent track.

Go! dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Surf riffs and a nifty hook, with a rhythmic and churning backtrack. The organ-guitar balance is pretty good.

Hawaii Five-0 dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a decent rendering of the TV hit, but the organ lead just buries any semblance of surf. It's way to far up front.

Surf (Instrumental)

"Surf Spot" is about the best piece of writing I've heard from the Daytonas. It's infectious and rhythmic, and well thought out. Instrument balance is good.
