Track by Track Review

The 'In' Crowd dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

This is a very Ventures inspired cover of Dobie Gray's "The 'In' Crowd." Fun and rhythmic, its energy carries it, as does the Bob Bogle guitar sound.

Runaway dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

This is a really warm and twangy version of Del Shannon's exquisite "Runaway." While not original sounding, it is really fine listening, with plenty of energy and round tone. Very cool!

Midnight Sea dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The waves break on the shore as "Midnight Sea" opens with island whammy and round tone. While it's Ventures inspired, it's also quite unlike the V-boys. Moody and swimmingly cool.

Surf Rider dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This reverb free warm whammied slightly sped up version of "Surf Rider" rings like the V-boys original in the bridge, yet has more quirkiness than their original. Quite respectful and warm.

Summer Kisses, Winter Tears dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

On the fast side, this fine track is very enjoyable, with occasional double picked flourishes and semi-mean tone. A little drama, a travelin' structure, and a catchy melody line. Very cool track!

Besame Mucho dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Consuelo Velasquez's best known melody "Besame Mucho" has been surfed up a few times, most notably by Johnny Fortune. In some ways, tone is like his, but the arrangement is warmer and more fluid. Very nice track!

Yozora-No-Hoshi dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big whammy chords and a churning rhythm pump along in "Yozora-No-Hoshi." Thick and almost aggressive, it has a coolness and charm about it, as well as a near-hard driving power. Cool track.

Mission Impossible dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

A tight and effective cover of the TV theme, well played without being quirky.

Mystery Dream dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

"Mystery Dream" is a warm MOR-ish track with twang and whammy. Pleasant, but not remarkable.

Summer In The City dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

This is a Ventures-ish cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's signature hit. Fun and spunky.

Traces dotdot
Rock MOR (Instrumental)

"Traces" is a slushy MOR instro with an blend of Shadows and Ventures sounds. Pretty, but forgettable.

Green Pepper Beat dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

On the Ventures side of the aisle, "Green Pepper Beat" is spunky and twangy, and very fun. The melody is cool, and the whammy just fine, as is the vibrato verse.

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother dotdot
Soft Rock (Instrumental)

This is a soft and lush cover of the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." Aside from its prettiness, it's more or less best left as a backdrop.

Walkin' The Carpet dotdot
Soft Rock (Instrumental)

The country song gets a soft twang arrangement. Quite pretty with cool whammy.

Psychedelic Sandwich dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

A hundred miles from psychedelia, "Psychedelic Sandwich" is a very cool track with plucky verses, vibrato, a touch of country whine, and a warmth that's quite attractive. Very nice, and it's surfable too.

Mindbender dotdotdot
Shadows (Instrumental)

The Stingers do a Shadows clone arrangement of "Mindbender." It's very pretty and fluid, but too derivative of the Hank Marvin sound.

Curves dotdotdot
Shadows (Instrumental)

Pomp and big shimmer whammy, twang, and moody tone permeate "Curves." Quite a fine track on the slow side of the aisle.

Glass Radio dotdotdotdot
Shadows Surf (Instrumental)

Like Hank Marvin on the bongo trail to the beach, "Glass Radio" is stunningly cool. Aquatic, yet wholly European, and quite attractive.

Stabilized dotdotdot
MOR Shadows (Instrumental)

Bouncy and churning with restrained energy, "Stabilized" is mechanical in meter and quite precise.

Winter's Rose dotdot
MOR Shadows (Instrumental)

"Winter's Rose" floats softly on a filmy scene of distant sadness and lost romance. Pretty.

Hush My Heart dotdot
MOR Shadows (Instrumental)

"Hush My Heart" moves slowly on an tape-echoed guitar softly playing over a restrained backtrack.

All Day dotdotdot
Vacation Shadows (Instrumental)

Almost island sounding, but perhaps Italian touristy at the same time. "All Day" is light and fluffy in a complete escape from reality kinda way. Nice track.

Theme For Young Lovers dotdot
MOR Shadows (Instrumental)

The Shadows' "Theme For Young Lovers" is, well, a lot like the Shadows.

Horse Ride dotdot
MOR Shadows (Instrumental)

"Horse Ride" is a bouncy flowing Shadows styled instro that's pleasant and does not demand focus.

Castle Mood dotdotdot
Moody Shadows (Instrumental)

A little moody, a little stone-cold, "Castle Mood" is a lush and sad number with an almost hopeless lost romance about it. It reminds me a bit of some of the music from Dr. Zsivago. Very cool!

Matelot dotdotdotdot
Soft Surf (Instrumental)

Ever since I first heard the Renegaids' cover of "Matelot," I knew it should be a surf instro. This is pretty close! It just lacks the fire of the tribal tom toms and double picked reverb. The Mach IV need to cover it!
