Track by Track Review

Dragula dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Dragula" is just a thrash progression on the low-E with screams and diabolical laughs. Ultra trash from one of the most under rated female guitarists, back by one of the most incompetent rhythm sections.

Toronado dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Toronado" is dedicated to the classic Oldsmobile. The thick over reverbed sound masks some of the intense energy of this amazingly well written surf pounder. A melodic and rhythmic riff drives this home. The keys are suitably low in the mix for the most part.

Space and Shore dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a very competent surf treatment of this traditional song. The arrangement is very much like the Untamed Youth version. Lots of reverb and oomph. "Space and Shore" is actually "Sorento" a.k.a. "Sea and Shore."

Cannon Beach dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Cannon Beach" is a good modern surf tune. It sports lots of chunk, and growly lead guitar tone, and a very surfable melody line. Memorable, well written, and fun.

Surfeit dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great percussion and an opening garage riff that's mighty close to the Sonics' "Cinderella." Riff rockin' bald headed garage surf the way only Baldy and Billy Childish do it. Lo-fi reverb grumble.

San Onofre dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"San Onofre" is not the Bob Vaught and the Renegaids track. It's a riffy hard drivin' rocker with spark than finesse. Really bad out of phase ambient stereo portrays a band on the edge. The Car Thieves have lots of spunk, but no recording budget.

Bumble Bee dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Hard rockin' surf trash assault on the Ventures' bashing of Rimsky Korsakov's "Flight Of The Bumble Bee." Way too much fun and infectious energy. Grumbly and over the edge.

Bajjad dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This non-CD track rules with rhythm and power (surprise surprise). No limits to the thick and awesome energy of this nearly fanatical raver. A fine melody line and spectacular energy, with lots of reverb magic.

Penetration dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is an average arrangement and performance of the Pyramids' "Penetration," though it's certainly heavily reverbed and chunky. It's based on the Ventures' arrangement, but much more reverby, and with the silly string swipes replaced by great surf chords. Solid and very cool.

Beach Genius dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Progression based, whammied, and chunky. This is a very good modern surf track. It growls, it howls, it rhythmically chunks. Love and kisses to the purveyors of brilliantly simple work like this.

Road Hog dotdot
Garage (Instrumental)

Trashy no-fi garage instro thrashing from the mind of Sir Bald Diddley. More like a late fifties small town rocker than a surf instro, with a bit of Link Wray edge. If not for its energy, it would be completely dismissible.

You Silly Savage dot
Garage (Instrumental)

Another awful recording for the Car Thieves. A sloppy performance of a basic R&B riff with shouting.

Nightmare At The Drag
Surf (Instrumental)

Elka Zolot wails on her Fender ax on this cool song. It's as trashy as ever, but there's so much pheromone energy in the performance that it seems not to matter. A great melody line and extra chunk.

El Tortura dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"El Tortura" defines surf sludge! It's huge, lumbering, intense, majorly dark and mean. Riff surf a la Link Wray at Waimea. Thunder, monster tubes, and pure evil.

Surfari dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Original Surfaris' dark and crunchy "Surfari" is played fast and furiously. Solid and retro.

Walking The Plank dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Power surf, power double picking, power delivery. A fine tune in the high energy trad mold. Very strong writing, and powerful delivery. Even the drum solo is interesting. Did I mention the power?

Headless Chicken dot
Backwoods Garage (Instrumental)

One more derivative chicken bopper... nothing original, but lots of energy. All trash all the time.

Comanche dot
Garage (Instrumental)

It's hard to imagine, but the Car Thieves make this Link Wray cover sound even trashier than Billy Childish. It's that horrid out of phase stereo that takes it over the edge.
