Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Collection: Stevie and His Sideburns vs. Pozor Vlak

 | This is a fine slit release with six tracks from Stevie and His Sideburns and six from Pozor Vlak. Certainly on the garagy, maybe even frat side of surf, but also very fun and party oriented. |
Picks: Pozor Vlak - Role Cage, Atomic Drop, Schwanzus Longus, Gagarin, Crazy Kruger, On Trabi Island, Stevie and his Sideburns - Die Manner vom Strahlenschutz, Hula Hub Reifentwist, Monster Psycho Agent, Verfolgungsfahrt
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Bongos and a "Gloria"-like rhythm deliver a fun and period sound. More melodic and less punky than one might expect from Pozor Vlak's older work. Pretty interesting, with intensity and surf splash.
Surf (Instrumental)
The dark edge of twang with a fairly simple, more frat rock-ish riff. The breaks are very cool.
Surf (Instrumental)
A bit of a "Boss" reference with bongos and very cool pickslides. Some Link Wray references separate the verses. "Schwanzus Longus" is very tight. Interspersed are demented laughs and echoed danger.
Surf (Instrumental)
Opening with a sample about Uri Gagarin, "Gagarin" is primarily a riff dominated, bongo infested rocker with a buzz. This is short and quite fun!
Surf (Instrumental)
"Crazy Kruger" is a rhythmic track with throbbing guitar. Kind of rockabilly, kind of surf, and quite fun. I like this a lot better without the Leslie swirl of he earlier version.
Surf (Instrumental)
Some Leslie swirl, some stereo guitars, some double picked surf grind, and bongos. Excellent bass throb is very important to the way this works. Some cowboy rhythms and an infectious beat.
Surf (Instrumental)
Pumping with a stomp feeling, "Nackt im Nachtclub" is echo-driven frat rockin' twang. It certainly has the feeling of a club.
Die Manner vom Strahlenschutz

Surf (Instrumental)
Muted surf guitar and surf chords with glissandos. Dark and dangerous, with some start-stop bridges. "Die Manner vom Strahlenschutz" is rather unusual in that regard. Lots of spunk.
Surf (Instrumental)
Drums launch "Hula Hub Reifentwist" as the bass and muted guitar remind me of The Ventures' go-go oriented numbers like "Go-Go Dancer," just slower. fanciful and fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
Muted surf guitar plays a cool melody riff with some verses muted and some more open and straight surf. This is relatively straight forward monster surf, but with more charm than many such tracks. The chanted calls of the title remind me of The Surf Coasters' "Beach Monster."
Surf (Instrumental)
Neil Hefti's "Bat Man" is stomped and thrashed out. High energy and splashy frat rockin' energy.
Surf (Instrumental)
With complete abandon, Stevie and his Sideburns thrash through "Verfolgungsfahrt" is a serious hurry. Almost rushed, but actually just at the edge of control.
