Track by Track Review
The Astroglides - Turkish Delight
"Turkish Delight" has been floated about in demo form as a CD single for a while. In final mastering, it is simply superb! It's so much bigger! Huge, powerful, imaginative, and utterly infectious. This very ominous instro with a Mediterranean mystique and stereo guitars darkly spreads danger, subtle optimism, and desperation as only great songs can. It uses many changes and to convey its stark imagery. I like this a lot.
The Bahareebas - Dunewalk
"Dunewalk" sports an infectious ska rhythm and very satisfying lead guitar. It's not complex, but it sure is cool! It romps, stomps, and flows. Every time I hear it, I like it more!
The Bambi Molesters - Central Coast Swing
A slow and shimmering track, with a picturesque sound and melody line. There is a sense of settling waters after a storm, with the sky still gray, and the surf small but choppy, like a pool still sloshing after everyone has gotten out. Fine track.
The Beat Tornados - Kreml De La Kreml
Whammy dipped rhythm and glissandos and a very cool gypsy influenced melody run with raw energy and guts. "Kreml De La Kreml" is a fiery song with a catchy melody line and very cool rhythm track.
The Bitch Boys - Surfin' Tide
The waves lap the shore, the delicate damped reverb drips like rain into a barrel, the chords shimmer shallow whammy, presenting a dramatic herald to a really cool surf tune. Rich double picked guitar, glissandos on fire, and a catchy melody line with an edge. A truly fine track.
The B-Sea Surfers - Freeway
Grand chord whammy and a very strong melody born of Russian sadness plays out atop of a light and warm beat. "Freeway" is a very well written song.
Martin Cilia - Return Of The Surf Guitar
"Return Of The Surf Guitar" sounds like it might be a merger of the Atlantics' style, west coast surf's arrangements, and the flair of the Baltic surfbands. Infectious, rhythmic, and rich in changes and aural quality. Excellent!
Los Coronas - Big Wave Riders
Great rolling drums and a driving rock rhythm runs hard beneath an intense telegraphic lead pattern before the melody comes in. While not particularly surfy, "Big Wave Riders" sure does rock! The song is very visual, in a sweeping adventure sort of way. Very good!
The Dead Rocks - Center Of The Universe
Up tempo and full of panoramic surf imagery, coupled with thick whammy chords, "Center Of The Universe" is an epic tale of travel across great expanses in search of the ultimate curl. It's a very cool track!
Dr. Frankenstein - Surfin' At Sambouco Beach
"Surfin' At Sambouco Beach" is a pretty heavy garagy surf epic, with power and grind, and a catchy riff. Lots of fine whammy and pounding tom toms.
This demo version of "Tornado" really rocks. Excellent rhythm and lead guitars, rock solid bass, and superb drums. Driving compressed double picked leads ride atop a high energy bed. Excellent!
The Fathoms - Fathom This!
The rhythm patterns here are superb, as is the melody. "Fathom This!" is a wonderful and rhythmic track with a catchy sound. Very much in the infectious mold of "Fathomless" and other early Fathoms instros, this features great sax breaks and totally cool guitars.
Fifty Foot Combo - SL 54 Automatic
Garage Surf (Instrumental)
Slinky and dark, driven and relentless, this riff meister uses drama and flying drums, and mighty speedy double picking. While it's not very melodic, it is an excellent track, absolutely power driven and bullet speed raging. The delicate damped end is really nice.
The Invisible Surfers - Down At Santa Marina
Garage Surf (Instrumental)
Glorious guitar noise with a very cool melody and oddly mysterious imagery. Grating and intense, yet fluid and melodic. "Down At Santa Marina" is one cool track!
Los Kanibales Surf Combo - Cold Water Tiburon
Dark bass and whammy chords bring forth a song in mid-fi that calls to dangerous surf. Its fast and angular, with a post surf kind of edge. Quite original.
Lost Acapulco - Aqua Vulva
Aside from the obvious title, "Aqua Vulva" is a gentle, if slightly dark, instro with a moderate pace and engaging melody. Pretty, yet depressing at times. The effect is a compelling surf instro with a magnetic sound.
The Lunatics - Top Secret
Spy Surf (Instrumental)
Rockin' drums and splashing guitar with a walking bass line, plucking out a very Laika and the Cosmonauts kinda tune. The dribbling double picked bridge is very cool. This is very infectious.
Los Mel-tones - Rocket Sled To Oahu
This track is a rippin adventure. Speedy and melodic, with punchy damped guitar. Edgy surfisms. The rhythm guitar is heavy staccato, while the lead and organ trade off on the melodic line. Energetic.
Messer Chups - Flash Of The Night
A reverb dark kick launches a gloomy number that's spooky and wonderfully muted. Everything slow and dramatic about the classic surf sound is here. "Flash Of The Night" is a fine track with a seriously cool arrangement. The whistling in the middle adds a spaghetti western touch.
"Punjabi" is a spectacular surf instrumental, much in the Treble Spankers' tradition. With the title chanted, it takes on a tribal and dangerous edge. Dark and engaging. Long fuzz sustain and big surf guitar layered via reverb and thick production.
The Star and Key of the Indian Ocean - Easy Tune
Great drums a la the Breakers' "Jet Stream" launch this track. Some tweaky damped picking adds to the vintage Midwest sound. The surf rhythm and bass grumble complete the scene. This is a fine track!
The Supersonicos - Pipemind
Psi-Fi Surf (Instrumental)
Two guitars trade off playing the melody riff while a third plays a damped surf rhythm and glissandos. "Pipemind" is a short (:44) track with solid bass rumble and excellent drums.
The Surf Coasters - Dreams
This new recording of "Dreams" furthers the tale of my all time favorite Surf Coasters instro. Less dynamic, more fluid, and very appealing. The bass is extra dirty where it carries the melody line in the break. Superb!
The Surfites - Tail Slide
Wonderful muted reverb, superb electric piano, and a very catchy melody. "Tail Slide" is a superb track that's evocative of everything attractive about the lighter side of vintage surf. Totally cool!
Surf Me Up, Scotty! - Mr. Moto
Oriental chords introduce Paul Johnson's classic "Mr. Moto." This is among the most original covers of this song I've heard in quite a while. Rich and reverby, and a step away from the crowd.
The Thurston Lava Tube - Gluon Boy
"Gluon Boy" is an interesting track, with dark fuzz and echoed salt water guitar lines, offset by organ and dangerous effects. Futurist and intense, spacy and thematic, and feedback and distortion laden verses.
The Tormentos - Locked In
Grand dual muted reverb rhythm and muted lead melody, along with whammy chords, solid bass and great drums really make this a superb track. Where similar tracks are more optimistic, "Locked In" is moody.
Los Twang! Marvels - Sea Of Glory
"Sea Of Glory" is a track with a catchy traveling feeling. The rich tone and superb muted notes, along with the dribbled double picked lines, and the original and very likable melody line really make this shine. It gets finished off with glorious whammy chords, and then it grows on you! Very cool!
Wadadli Riders - The Killer Wave
This song is pretty optimistic and a bit playful, especially notable given its title. That contrast aside, great drums, wonderful tone and melody, and a great surf vibe permeate "The Killer Wave." This is a splendid track!
The Wet Tones - Lightning Strike
Vibrato shimmer and big stinging chords... Then the thunder is heard and the drums bring forth a wonderful damped surf extravaganza of liquid springs and twang. I must say this is a very original song with a great beat and attractive sound. Magnificent!
