Split: Ralph and the Garage Surfers vs. The Unknownsdotdotdot
artworkThis is great and very limited edition split seven from two of Ralph Johnston's pre Surfdusters bands. The music is mighty rhythm oriented material, subtle like the Fireballs, but more rhythmic, and featuring finely damped reverb. Very cool songs. They created a different sound, a new and exciting area of surf. Too bad they have faded.
Picks: Ralph and the Garage Surfers - Rippin' N' Rumblin', Rasputin, The Unknowns - Olaje de Misterio, Storm Warning

Track by Track Review

Ralph and the Garage Surfers - Rippin' N' Rumblin' dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is one chunky rhythm monster. It's quiet restrained nature should not deceive - it has a bunch of power, and is a very infectious track. There is plenty of drama, a moody feel, and dripping reverb. I love it.

Ralph and the Garage Surfers - Rasputin dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

There are no detectable Russian stereotypes here, but the rhythm and charm seem to merge the evil empire's sad pre-Red days with surf rhythm. The melody is Russian enough, while the drums and bass play relentlessly trad. Chunky and infectious.

The Unknowns - Olaje de Misterio dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is simply one of the most hypnotic surf instros around. Its relentless rhythm and rolling beat capture you and don't let go. It's on the gentle side, and quite alluring. Excellent!

The Unknowns - Storm Warning dotdotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

"Storm Warning" is one infectious rhythmic track. The melody line is very friendly, in a deja vu sorta way. It's quite original, but has that instant familiarity that is the mark of a great track. Extra chunk and great chops.
