Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Collection: R&B On Lakewood Boulevard
|There's not a drop of surf here, but many superbly greasy vintage R&B numbers from the Downey vaults cut at Dolphin's of Hollywood make this a groovy listen. As a bonus is the coolest take on "Night Scene" ever!|
Picks: Paul Clifton - Jay Walkin', Chuck Higgins - Sorry 'Bout That, Night Scene, T-Bone Walker, Jr. - Sumptin' Else
Track by Track Review
Paul Clifton - Jay Walkin'
"Jay Walkin'" is a grimy blueser with a smoky bar feel. Soulful sax and rolling piano above a walking bass line and steady beat.
Chuck Higgins - Sorry 'Bout That
This is a saucy R&B number with a very Rumblers feel. Gourd, moody bass, jammin' piano, and an unbeatable groove. Gritty sax and spoken lines. Just too cool!
Chuck Higgins - Night Scene
This is a stellar cover of the Rumblers' wonderful "Night Scene" by an R&B artist with a long history that goes back to Dolphin's of Hollywood and the early fifties. This has a greasy inland feel that's very sultry and emotional. Its inland sound morph the song into a whole new place, while keeping the basic lurid appeal front and center. Wonderful!
T-Bone Walker, Jr. - Sumptin' Else
"Sumptin' Else" is a pretty straight forward blues jam. Lost in a fog of thousands of similar grooves, it just doesn't stick in ram despite excellent playing.
