Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Split: Thee Phantom 5ive vs The Penetrators

 | Two great bands, both members of the intergalactically acclaimed Southern Surf Syndicate. Thee Phantom 5ive are from Nashville, Tennessee. The Penetrators are from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and are the founders of the Southern Surf Syndicate. These guys have a well structured traditional sound with a uniquely identifiable approach. Their playing is great (as witnessed at Summer Surf III), and their energy is unmistakably high. Some of their originals are more rhythm or chord oriented than usual for surf, but still deliver the goods in high style. |
Picks: The Penetrators - The Jester, Last Of The V-8 Interceptors, Thee Phantom 5ive - Tube City
Track by Track Review
The Penetrators - The Jester

Surf (Instrumental)
Earlier version of Jim Messina and the Jesters' The Jester. The performance is fiery.
The Penetrators - Last Of The V-8 Interceptors

Surf (Instrumental)
This is a mighty tasteful original with a warm melody and lot's of power. Earlier version of the other song like "Melodie's Dilemma." This is a riffy song that's fun and rhythmic. The midsection is the best part, with the more of an obvious melody line.
Thee Phantom 5ive - Tube City

Surf (Instrumental)
Very fast paced aggressive version of the Trashmen's classic album track.
Thee Phantom 5ive - Wipeout At Buoy 5
Surf (Instrumental)
Pretty good original tune with some quirkiness to it, and the keys are more in evidence.
