artworkThis is a pretty cool garage comp from Mexico and South America. The majority of the comp are vocals of varying interest, most notable a cover of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride." The rest are instrumentals, some of which are quite good! This is the double 10" version of the CD.
Picks: Los Electronicos - Las Mirlas, Los Holy's - Campo De Vampiros, Los Shains - Shains A-Go-Go, Los Sinners - Rebelde Radioactivo, Los Sonambulos - Sonambulo, Surfers De Los Campeones - Checkered Flag

Track by Track Review

Bat Boy - Cheating Charlie dotdot
Spy (Instrumental)

This is a slow and easy song with slightly exotic percussion and whistling spy organ. The guitar circles through an espionage pattern. This is fairly unimaginative, but much like a nicely done mall organ display with beginner jazz accompaniment.

Los Comandos - Taurus dotdot
Pre-Funk (Instrumental)

Cheesy organ and pre-funk combo percussion back wah wah guitar in a jammy setting. Rare, but not memorable.

Los Electronicos - Las Mirlas dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

A relentless one note throb and spooky keys create a dangerous and unsettled image. The lightly reverbed guitar plays an espionage riff. Mid stream, the pace picks up, creating some nervous tension. More psychedelic than melodic, though it's an effective piece for an afternoon trance.

Los Holy's - Campo De Vampiros dotdotdotdot
Psychedelic (Instrumental)

Los Holy's do a semi psychedelic cover of The Ventures' "Vamp Camp" with great affect. The throbbing guitar is a very cool touch, and the way the Leslie pumps the organ really makes it work well. Soft, yet unsettling.

Los Shains - Shains A-Go-Go dotdotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

Hot rockin' speedy near surf twango from Los Shains. This is a ripper with a bunch-o-spunk and fire. The vocal verse is limited to uttering the title a coupe of times. Frat with soul and charm, and a whole lot of energy. The lead guitar and drums are pretty cool!

Los Sinners - Rebelde Radioactivo dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This is near surf in the way midwest b-sides were presurf. Grode guitar and a raw sax break cry out frat with infectious energy and approaching splash surf jam sensibilities. "Rebelde Radioactivo" is a real wailer. Even through the muddy sound, you can tell they ripped!

Los Sonambulos - Sonambulo dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Sonambulo" is a very nicely done cover of Santo and Johnny's "Sleep Walk," with tremolo rhythm guitar and a no-lap lead. The piano adds a vintage surf sound. This is a very refreshing arrangement that doesn't borrow from the trite, but also retains the silky romance of the song. Very cool!

Surfers De Los Campeones - Checkered Flag dotdotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

Following the engine's revving up, "Checkered Flag" rises to be a cover of Bo Diddley's "Hey Bo Diddley." It translates pretty well into instrumental form. Cool drums and bass, and that great Bo Diddley rhythm, and the extra harsh square wave fuzz verses are total garage!
