Collection: Hot Rod Drag Racesdotdot
artworkThis is one of a pair of collections issued by Almor Records that included some vital vintage surf instros, but also used Dick Dale's pre-surf vocal pop track "Fairest Of Them All" as a come-on. Once past the rude discovery of Dick's vocal session, the album comes alive with power and suave surf coolness from the Original Surfaris, and the Fireballs. This was reissued in the late eighties on vinyl. Maybe it will appear on CD some day.
Picks: Screaming Tires, Latin Soul, Pit Stop, Soul Beat, Chicken, Stick Shift, Drag Strip, Elimination, Gunshot

Track by Track Review

Screaming Tires dotdot
Beatnik Jazz (Instrumental)

This may be credited to the Fireballs, but the bongos and flute make that really hard to believe. It's a beatnik jam fest with jazzy leanings and hot rod sound effects.

Latin Soul dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

While crudely recorded, particularly the drums, this is the poundiest, hottest, and most infectious version of this fine tune. Ultra powerful guitar tones take it beyond the Sentinals version. It has all the Latin flair, but is monster surf guitar dominated.

Pit Stop dotdot
Fifties Sax (Instrumental)

More like "Screaming Tires," with a sax instead of a flute, and a fifties rock sound. The melody riff is based on "Down By The Riverside."

Soul Beat dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Central Coast soul sound is stronger than the East LA sound that usually dominates versions of this tune. This is not just soulful, but also surfy and large. A fine version.

Chicken dotdot
Beatnik Jazz (Instrumental)

Hot rod engines wail and the bongos fly... this relatively slow piece is pretty beat generation syrupy, with flute lead.

Stick Shift dot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is not a cover of the Duals' "Stick Shift." It's a fifties jam, and not great at that.

Drag Strip dot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a Johnny and the Hurricanes wanna be kinda track, with that organ lead sound, but without their hard drivin' energy.

Elimination dot
Surf (Instrumental)

More fifties sax 'n' roll based on a riff. Kinda that B-movie teenage dance stuff with a female chorus.

Gunshot dotdotdot
Pre Surf (Instrumental)

"Gunshot" is a cool and typical Fireballs tune. It has a plucky humorous melody line that is infectious and choppy. It has strange highly reverbed hand claps, and a cantina feel to it. Melodic and happy.
