Collection: Guitar Sound From Holland Vol 1dotdotdot
artworkThis three-way split CD sports some very original arranging and spunky playing, and some less interesting, more pedestrian tracks too. They all sound similar in style and production, as if it's all one band, but here are some differences too. "Long Long Ago" and "Ghostriders Melody" are superb!
Picks: The Jaguars - In The Mood, My Bizzy Fingers, Wheels, Mexico, Wipe Out, Irene, Rock Of Ages - Alpens Ros, Walking Back To Alabama, Darling You Belong To Me, Ghostriders Melody, Yellow Jacket, Quatre Mains, The Spectacles - Humoresque, Cowboy's Dream, Long Long Ago, North Sea Blues, Lonely Guitar

Track by Track Review

The Jaguars - In The Mood dotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Delicate echoed guitar plays Ernie Fields's classic hit. It's nicely done, but fairly unremarkable.

The Jaguars - My Bizzy Fingers dotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Swimming whammy and stereo delayed ambiance create a spatial effect. The song is a light thing with tremolo shimmer and too much reverberation washing across the track.

The Jaguars - Wheels dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

The String-A-Longs' "Wheels" is a great song for The Jaguars' delicate muted echo guitars. This is really nice. It's much easier, less rock than the original, but still very cool!

The Jaguars - Mexico dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Bob Moore's "Mexico" is very nicely adapted to The Jaguars' sound. Nothing like the original, or any of the surf covers, this version is superb in its delicacy, and a pure pleasure to hear. Neither horns nor aggressive guitars live here.

The Jaguars - Wipe Out dotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This version of The Surfaris' classic has none of the intense character of the original, and only a moderate attempt at Ron Wilson's drums. Tepid at best!

The Jaguars - Irene dotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This classic easy listening song is done with an easy Shadowsy gate and heavily echoed sound. Pretty, but unremarkable.

Rock Of Ages - Alpens Ros dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Alpens Ros" is a mid tempo bouncer with just enough edge to raise it above easy listening. Charming and animated.

Rock Of Ages - Walking Back To Alabama dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Slightly countrified, "Walking Back To Alabama" flows like any good country instro should. Warm and gingham friendly, with charm and style.

Rock Of Ages - Darling You Belong To Me dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Slow and sultry, echo-twanged, and sporting a very cool bass line. I'll go further, it' the bass that sets this apart from the plethora of over echoed guitar instros, and makes it interesting. delicate second guitar and spatial sound.

Rock Of Ages - Ghostriders Melody dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Muted echoed glissandos pan across the soundscape throughout this spirited and original rendering of Stan Jones cowboy classic. Full of spunk and charm, Rock Of Ages' performance and arrangement make this a unique cover among the thousands out there. very nice!

Rock Of Ages - Yellow Jacket
Near Surf (Instrumental)

The Ventures' "Yellow Jacket" is done with reverence and twang. There are a couple of mini glissandos lurking here and there in the form of slides that add spunk. High spirited and very fun!

Rock Of Ages - Quatre Mains dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This is lush and easy, echoed and circular in the beginning, and stompy from there on. Spirited and fun, but not really memorable. Great drums!

The Spectacles - Humoresque dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Humoresque" rolls through circular echoed riffs that are very fun. The sound is pure Shadows inspired.

The Spectacles - Cowboy's Dream dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Cowboy's Dream" is a slow moving track with a tried and true easy cowboy beat and echoed lead guitar. Pretty and enjoyable. The muted echoed lines are delicate and cool.

The Spectacles - Long Long Ago dotdotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Spanish influences, fast pace, playful melody lines, near double picked fancy, and plenty of fun. "Long Long Ago" is one fun track with deluxe reverbed muted high on the neck flash and very fast picking. Superb!

The Spectacles - North Sea Blues dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"North Sea Blues" is a mid tempo bluesy number with great playing, and it's very enjoyable while its playing, but there's just not much character to make it stay with you.

The Spectacles - Lonely Guitar dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Lonely Guitar" moves along at an easy gate in the tradition of the echoed guitar instros of Europe. The slow warble of the notes is subtle, yet very artful, and is amplified by the echo.
