album coverVarious Artists Fury-Mental [20 Hot Instrumentals] 3 stars
Label: Fury FCD 3051

This is a great collection of surf, surfabilly, and rockabilly instros, spanning quite a time span, all from the last decade. the artwork would lead you to believe it was all rockabilly twang bop, but there is a surprising amount of surf and surfable music here. A good buy, and it's pretty cheap to!

Picks: Hot Boogie Chillun 'Dinosaur', Iain Terry 'Haunted Highway', Jeff Potter 'Rhythm Riot', Ray Condo and his Hardrock Goners 'Bronco Loco', The Atomic Spuds 'Roswell Crash', The Flames 'Gypsy Beat', The Muskrats 'Mooncrest', The Rapiers 'Green Jeans', The Razorbacks 'Fury', The Roadrunners 'Lockjaw', The Rough Diamonds 'Warpath', The Surfin' Gorillas 'The Surfin' Gorilla'

THE SURFIN' GORILLAS "The Surfin' Gorilla" 5 stars

Hot Dick Dale-ish guitar and lots of glissandoes, plus a trumpet way in the back. Very cool. The gentle break adds deluxity to an already great track.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE AROUSERS "Friction" 2 stars

A sax dominated fifties instro squank.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

JEFF POTTER "Rhythm Riot" 3 stars

Chord progression rockabilly with a slow vibrato lead riff. Infectious and super simple.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE RAZORBACKS "Fury" 4 stars

Tom toms and whammy shimmer on the low-E, surfy twang and glissandoes. The tom toms suck you in. It is rhythmic and pristine.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE MUSKRATS "Mooncrest" 3 stars

Glissandoes and a basic surf progression. It's surfy, though pretty darn dry.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE ROUGH DIAMONDS "Warpath" 3 stars

Fifties whammy with that pre-surf feel and a grodie guitar.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

RAY CONDO AND HIS HARDROCK GONERS "Bronco Loco" 4 stars

This lies somewhere between John Barry, the Shadows, and surf lap steel. The fiddles are too cool!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

DARREL HIGHAM "Strollin' Guitar" 3 stars

A standard fifties slow guitar boogie instro.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE JACKALS "Mohawk Twist" 3 stars

Out of print for a millennium, it's a cool super simple grinder with mid-eighties surfisms.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE RAPIERS "Green Jeans" 3 stars

Atlantics twang on green slowness with added (?). Fast and inspired, with demented guitar echo. "Green Jeans" is a rockabilly translation of "Green Sleeves." Infectious twango.
Shadows Instrumental Stereo

BOP SHACK STOMPERS "Stampede" 3 stars

Raw basic fifties version. Thin sound.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE BLUE DEVILS "Stiletto" 3 stars

Basic progression and honky sax. A fifties number than has no direction.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

HOT BOOGIE CHILLUN "Dinosaur" 3 stars

Big slow grindy Link Wray cow bell cool fifties instro.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE ROADRUNNERS "Lockjaw" 3 stars

A cool upright bass and twangy lead guitar. Chicken bop chops, simple, and almost melody free. Chunky, quite fun, and intense.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

HAYWIRE "Rattlesnake" 2 stars

Link Wray with super simple melody free chunk.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE ATOMIC SPUDS "Roswell Crash" 3 stars

Whammy and twang and surprisingly cool cardboard drum sound. A very simple progression accented with whammy stingers.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE FLAMES "Gypsy Beat" 3 stars

Cool melody/progression and pregnant guitar tones. A mystic and haunting mid tempo instro.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE PLAYBOYS "Invitation To Death" 3 stars

Sax and fifties guitar, and way too much tape echo. Just an R&B jam.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

IAIN TERRY "Haunted Highway" 4 stars

Slow vibrato and stinging whammy create a haunted magic. Very nifty! It sports a simple melody, but has a certain magic.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK "Run Chicken Run" 3 stars

Chicken bop and chunka chunka rockabilly magic. Nice, but not remarkable.
