album coverVarious Artists Del-Fi Beach Party 3 stars
Label: Del-Fi DFCD 71263

This is the first of a pair of bachelor pad comps that Del-Fi are planning. This one focuses on beach party pop, hence the title. It contains some previously unreleased and some first time on CD tracks, most fun in the unpretentious sense.

Picks: Dave Myers and the Surftones 'Aquavelva', Preston Epps 'Bongo Beach', The Gonzos 'Church Key'

THE GONZOS "Church Key" 3 stars

This is like a lo-fi track of the Centurions doing the Revels' "Church Key." It's nasty and primitive, over reverbed and very low-E.

DAVE MYERS AND THE SURFTONES "Aquavelva" 4 stars

Based on the TV ads for the aftershave, this really interesting tune is quirky, plinky, and is backed by a magnificent shuffle beat. Endearing, and unlike anything else on record. Campy enough to fit into any lounge or exotica set.
Aftershave Glassfinger Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE CENTAVOS "Twist To KCBQ" 2 stars

This is a fifties dance party kinda tune, like the original television DJ's used as themes and appeared in too many films. This is its first appearance on CD. KCBQ was in San Diego, I think.
Fifties Dance Party Rock Instrumental Stereo

THE BRUCE JOHNSTON SURFING BAND "Surf Party (Surfer's Delight)" 2 stars

Bruce Johnston's first album was essentially a frat band thing, titled Surfers Pajama Party, and advertised as being recorded live at UCLA (doubtful). This track is a basic frat party anthemic dance number, sax oriented, R&B flavored, and rhythmic.
Hollywood Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE BOB KEANE ORCHESTRA "Twist and Freeze" 2 stars

This studio concoction mirrors the Hollywood music machine, with its girl chorus, and fifties pumpin' piano, and its movie music sensibilities.
Hollywood Instrumental Stereo

PRESTON EPPS "Bongo Beach" 3 stars

Preston Epps was a one hit wonder, who charted big time with "Bongo Rock," and followed that with a plethora of similar tunes. It was "Bongo Rock" that inspired the Surfaris to create "Wipe Out" with the drum breaks. This is a derivative track, much like his others, and based strongly on "Stand By Me" (Ben E. King). Fun for the next bachelor pad party you throw.
