Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Collection: Cocktail Companion

 | This is the CD issue of the singles box Estrus released a couple of years back. Much of this is available elsewhere. Most of this is only moderately interesting, and some is poorly recorded. The highlight is the Apemen track. |
Picks: Pogo A Go-Go, Intoxica, A Shot In The Dark, Mockingbird, The Carbonated Comet, Moonshine Martinis, Vampiro
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Early reverbiage from Holland's Apemen. Among their best early originals, "Pogo a Go-go" is chunky and quirky. The melody is fluid and way fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
The classic surf tune covered pretty well, but slowly played with a trad surf sound.
A Shot In The Dark
Exotic (Instrumental)
Unusual and very aggressive edgie band does a sax version of the Henry Mancini standard soundtrack tune.
Mockingbird
Garage Surf (Instrumental)
Lo-fi crap recording of "Road Runner" under the name "Mockingbird." The performance is ok, but the sound sux!
Surf (Instrumental)
Semi-lounge Pacific Northwest instro work.
Moonshine Martinis
Garage Rock & Roll (Instrumental)
Stereotypical moonshine bopalina.
Vampiro
Surf (Instrumental)
Sorta Bat Man-ish. Not much of a melody and not much direction. It was cool for about a minute, but then I got bored.
