Collection: Chairman Of The Board - Surf Soundtracks '64 To '74
artworkThis collection of soundtrack extracts are in large part from the same stable of musicians. There's not a lick of surf here, but then by 1969, surf film sound tracks had given up surf instros and jazz for angry rock. You surf instro fans will be wasting your money.
Picks: The Farm - San-Ho-Zay, Ground Shuffle, Innerspace, Coming Of Dawn, Music Convention - Big Green, Sitar Track, Bellyboard Beat, Smoghorn - Animal Kingdom

Track by Track Review

The Farm - San-Ho-Zay dotdot
Blues Rock (Instrumental)

This is a blues rock exercise in Freddy King's "San-Ho-Zay." Not a lick of surf here, but still, this is a tasteful excursion into the basics of electric blues. The organ is - well - like Jimmy Smith on a bad day.

The Farm - Ground Shuffle dotdot
Blues Rock (Instrumental)

"Ground Shuffle" is a heavy electric blues rock jam. It's much more about the textures than about music. Very jammy with no particular melody line. It reminded me a bit of early sixties R&B instros, but only slightly.

The Farm - Innerspace dotdot
Acoustic (Instrumental)

A nice little meandering on acoustic guitar. "Innerspace" is pretty in a sad way, but a long way from memorable.

The Farm - Coming Of Dawn
Faux-Psych (Instrumental)

Flute and stretched notes pretend to the Middle east, but don't really arrive. beyond that introduction, "Coming Of Dawn" is a slow moody scene setter with organ and acoustic guitar that try to create a drugged out psych mood, but only succeed in being a little disturbing.

Music Convention - Big Green dotdot
Faux-Psych (Instrumental)

"Big Green" is a very murky organ based pretend-psych workout. It's faux-drama and sludgy pace don't excite at all. Quite non-melodic.

Music Convention - Sitar Track
Faux-Sitar Sludge (Instrumental)

Plucked directly from a soundtrack, this track just slowly meanders while waves crash. Ho hum!

Music Convention - Bellyboard Beat dotdot
Surf Rock (Instrumental)

With dialog intact, "Bellyboard Beat" is a long drum solo. While played fast and furious, this track nonetheless demonstrates why drum solos generally suck.

Smoghorn - Animal Kingdom dotdot
Surf Rock (Instrumental)

Drums, a bit of exotic percussion, blues guitar licks, and no melody. "Animal Kingdom" is heavy and intense, but you'll not remember a lick.
