Track by Track Review

Big Mascara - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" could be an excellent track to cover. While the drums are more audible, the thin guitar and bass sound pulls down the effectiveness of the track.

Big Mascara - Pet Sementary dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a rockin' instro with solid drums and a cool riff. The melody is not at all sad or haunted, but rather is flippant and fun. There are nice changes in the arrangement, and some excellent playing all around. Great drums!

Mascara Del Mar And His Dragon Surfers - Dragon's Theme dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a well written track that's played well. It's recorded poorly, hiding the power and charm of the music. "Dragon's Theme" runs along pretty fast, with thin sound.

Mascara Del Mar And His Dragon Surfers - Mas Cerveza Para Mi dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Mas Cerveza Para Mi" is more of a frat rocker, with the beat being a main feature. I'm quite sure it would be much more powerful if it were not for the thin indistinct sound.

Placa Tumbler - Onda Zero dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

On the thrashy side of surf, "Onda Zero" shows you aggression and the speed of a shortboard in soup. The muted guitar lines are really cool. Big and chorded, with lots of energy.

Placa Tumbler - CO2 dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"CO2" is dark, with more punk edge than surf feel. Heavily dependent on chords rather than melody, it uses its power in lieu of beauty. In the end, it still works well enough to bring you back.

The Remoras - Noche Violenta dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A deep bass line brings on dangerous drums, and then dark chords. "Noche Violenta" is an ominous piece. It's not particularly melodic, but it's big and awash in magnetic evil. Very cool!

The Remoras - Remora's Song dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Moving slowly through a minimal riff like a horror flick on a rainy afternoon, "Remora's Song" oozes hidden danger and imaginary creatures. Excellent!

The Remoras - Yo Mate A Robert Smith dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Moody guitar lines call across the moor, while the bass warns of eyes in the shadows ahead, and the drums tell you to move faster. "Yo Mate A Robert Smith" is spatial and sullen, hooking right into a primal place in your psyche. Quite good!

Sr. Bikini - Saca La Chela dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This straddles surf coolness and riff rock Influenced by the introductory chords to "Scatter Shield," but otherwise just a fast riff rocker, except for the very cool mid section.

Sr. Bikini - Wave dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With some of the infectiousness of "Tequila," this song rocks and bounces with joy. "Wave" is a splendid song for a party. Way cool!

Sr. Bikini - Casino Shangai dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Casino Shangai" is a lovely song with long surf chords, moody bass, and exotic drums. Its mystery and haunting ambiance make it compelling. Slightly sad, or perhaps resigned, yet the double picked lines call to a better day.

Sr. Bikini - El Santo Had A Hot Rod dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Rockin' and rompin', "El Santo Had A Hot Rod" is more a rockabilly instro than surf, and more riff rocker than song. Full of energy with great drums!

Sr. Bikini - A Taste Of Honey dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Arrangement wise, this is a lot like the Halibut's version, though much less liquidy. Cool drums and lots of clever energy. Bobby Scott and Rick Marlow's "A Taste Of Honey" first charted in 1962 for Martin Denny, but it was the Tijuana Brass that had the hit in 1965.

Sr. Bikini - La Arena dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a lovely tropical song with island imagery and a flowing melody line. This very soothing track takes you to a quiet lagoon where tortuga sails through the break.

Los Twangers - Carnivora dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Thin mono sound keep some of the power of "Carnivora" from coming out. Its speed and excellent drums are its main feature, with solid bass and simple non-melodic guitar lines. Exuberant, but without focus.

Los Twangers - Hodad Girl dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Thin mono sound keep "Hodad Girl" from reaching its potential. This is a fun and flirty track that will bring you back. Imagine a combination of Paul Anka's "Diana" and the Diamond's "Little Darlin'" set to reverb, and you'd have the basic sound.
