Collection: Ballroom Bash Vol. 2dotdotdot
artworkBallroom Bash Vol. 2 is just what it looks like - a compilation of garage, frat, and a bit of surf. There's little here that's not available elsewhere. but if these bands are foreign to you, perhaps it's a launch point of sorts. One of the bands that didn't provide any instros for the comp is Bee Dee Kay and the Rollercoaster, and that's a shame, 'cuz I like their instro work a lot, and it's quite elusive in the US.
Picks: The Imperial Surfers - Si Yo Tuviera Un Martillo, Hullabaloo Beat, The Waistcoats - Yellow Fuzz

Track by Track Review

The Imperial Surfers - Twist Twist dotdotdot
Frat (Instrumental)

"Twist Twist" is a rockin' fifties style sax honker with a touch of reverb. It's all frat and spunk. The Imperial Surfers really capture the small college band experience from so long ago.

The Imperial Surfers - Si Yo Tuviera Un Martillo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Using the Trini Lopez arrangement as a launch pad, The Imperial Surfers bring surf fun to Pete Seeger and Lee Hays' classic folk song. The surf guitar and sax trade off, and the band do the Trini Lopez chorus. This is way fun!

The Imperial Surfers - Hullabaloo Beat dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Hullabaloo Beat" is a chunky chorded number with surf stomp sensibilities. Maybe a little frat rock-ish, but very fun and full of energy. A small combo bash and a-half.

The Imperial Surfers - The Splib dotdotdot
Garage Surf (Instrumental)

Sax lead and surf guitar accompaniment front this frat rocker. This is a minimal riff rocker that's sorta cool. It's title was a mystery to me, but a slang dictionary said it is a Vietnam era term commonly used in a hip. non-pejorative way by black and white marines alike to identify a black marine.

The Montesas - Hey, Kassler dotdotdot
Frat (Instrumental)

This is an organ based frat rocker. It's all riff as were many Pacific Northwest instros back in the day. The drums are strong!

The Waistcoats - Yellow Fuzz dotdotdot
Garage (Instrumental)

The Waistcoats have produced cool fuzz garage sounds for a darn long time. "Yellow Fuzz" is just that, with a cool fuzz lead and subtle organ. Very garage!
