The Coconauts - Get Coco-Naughty!dotdotdot
artworkThere are some cool tracks here from an arrangement and reverb perspective, but the production values really hold this back. The drums are ambiently captured, and might as well be across the street. maybe the other guys don't like him! I'll pass on this one.
Picks: Space Ghost, Over The Rainbow, The Lonely Coconaut, Blue Hawaii, Pearly Shells, Coco-Naughty, Undertow

Track by Track Review

00Coco dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Rich muted reverb and a spooky spy melody line at first, and beyond a lead that seems a bit jammy to me.

Three Guitars dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Classic European melody delivered in a low key manner. Dreadful distant ambient drums damage the effectiveness of the track substantially.

Coco Au Go Go dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Two guitars playing with muted reverb and very distant ambient drums. "Coco Au Go Go" is a fun track musically, but aurally limited.

Space Ghost dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Rich muted guitars and rhythmic thunder, just lacking well captured percussion to really rise above the fray. The muted rhythm is relentless and dark, much as The Woodies used to generate.

Over The Rainbow dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Judy Garland's "Over The Rainbow" is rung out with reverb in control. The arrangement is cool, and the dribbled double picked verses are enticing. This reminds me some of The Surf Raiders.

The Lonely Coconaut dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Heavy muted reverb danger and a fine melody and arrangement. "The Lonely Coconaut" sports some serious thunder from the guitars and bass, but the drummer is hopelessly in another room, which is sad because he seems to have his chops down. The middle verse is "Malaguena."

Amapola dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Amapola" is a classic European number transformed into surf, which adds interest. Nicely done.

Blue Hawaii dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Blue Hawaii" is drenched in muted reverb and grins. The second guitar is particularly cool here, and the drums not quite as distant.

Pearly Shells dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Don Ho's "Pearly Shells" is nicely transformed into the surf idiom. Aurally thin, but darn cool anyway. Easy and island vacation inspired.

Coco-Naughty dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Church Key" like, perhaps liberated from The Phantom Surfers. "Coco-Naughty" is rhythmic and loud, with very cool shallow whammy chords.

She dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Long whammy chords and a sad melody release muted reverb on the world. Is this the Santo and Johnny song? Some really nice arrangement elements.

Undertow dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Pipeline" rhythm patterns and whammy chords. "Undertow" is powerful at times, and very cool. Spunky, well developed, and richly reverbed.

Return Of The Death Ray dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Shouts and ambient sound with panned glissandos. High spirits, but awful sound.
