The Clams - 6 Clamsdotdotdot
artworkThis six song demo was captured at home in the morning and for sale by that night's gig. You have to admire that. The Clams provided a bonus track on this copy that I think is one of the coolest things they've written. "Spy Clam Chase" has a great rhythm and engaging changes. A ton of potential for sure.
Picks: Micro Jammers, We Are The Clams, Bomp Bomp Surf, The Silver Lancer, Spy Clam Chase

Track by Track Review

Micro Jammers dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Darkening my doorstep like a vacuum cleaner salesman, the Clams live up to the song's title. "Micro Jammers" brings up images of the "uncool" swaying very slowly within the confines of their chairs, micro jamming as it were. 'Tis an odd number that connects to the know-nothing within.

We Are The Clams dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A signature song must define a band if it is to stick. "We Are The Clams" does that, with its simplicity and unintelligent feel. Simpleton surf with a grin and a few glissandos.

Bomp Bomp Surf dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

You might imagine this from its title. Chop-chop (bomp bomp) riff rock with a grin hidden behind a struggling youngster learning to walk. It's a humorous track with a Surf For Dummies feel. "Bomp Bomp Surf" grows on you.

The Silver Lancer dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Like a hot rod in waiting, "The Silver Lancer" cruises the main, leaving a trail of blue smoke to mark its passing. It's not fluid, with its chorded choppy bridges, yet it has elements of classic surf.

Spider Clams dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Jammin' rock beat backs the theme to Spider Man with spunk and twang. Big grins if you're into super heroes. A bit low brow, but fun nonetheless.

Mr. Moto dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Belairs' "Mr. Moto" is done in a straightforward fashion, with bass added. While definitely garage, it's reverent and vintage fun.

Spy Clam Chase dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This bonus track is not on the demo, but it's really cool. The picked bass is rhythmic and infectious. "Spy Clam Chase" is somewhat low key, and moody at times too, but it's a really interesting song. I really like the way it develops, and it has a kind of grin that goes with the slightly ominous edge. Really good song.
