The Chocolate Watchband - Melts In You Brain, Not On Your Wrist - The Complete Recordingsdotdotdotdot
artworkAll Chocolate Watchband, all the time! These guys are not just legendary, not merely the epitome of sixties garage psych bands, not only still very powerful and electric, they are also always great listening. This "everything" comp (actually, not quite everything) is one superb package. It contains their marvelous instrumental output spread among the rubble of their garage snarl and reverb coolness. Ed Cobb, assisted by Richard Podolor and Bill Cooper, made these tracks shine.
Picks: Psychedelic Trip, Dark Side Of The Mushroom, Expo 2000, Voyage Of The Trieste, The Inner Mystique, The Uncharted Sea, Blue's Theme

Track by Track Review

Psychedelic Trip dotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

This is essentially a backtrack for No Way Out, or an instrumental treatment. The lead guitar is quite liquid and reverbed out. Way cool!

Dark Side Of The Mushroom dotdotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

One of the more deceptively simple things from the Watchband, "Dark Side Of The Mushroom" is very surfable, quite psychedelic a la early Grateful Dead via the organ, and the imagery very illusive and murky. Very cool!

Expo 2000 dotdotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

An ultra-fine Richard Podolor song, with a superb blend of surf and psych. This is one of those songs that the band did not actually cut, and did not play live until April of 2000. A truly wonderful bit of fluff that had become part of their legend despite their not originating it.

Voyage Of The Trieste dotdotdotdot
Psychedelic (Instrumental)

"Voyage Of The Trieste" is a stunning visual epilog to a psychedelic journey through the wash of time. A Podolor creation that, while outside the style of the Watchband, nevertheless became a part of their mystique. Fluid, floaty, and relaxing.

Issued on the Inner Mystique LP and as a single by The Yo Yos.

The Inner Mystique dotdotdotdot
Psychedelic (Instrumental)

"The Inner Mystique" is another very pretty footnote to the Watchband story that emanated from Ed Cobb and Richard Podolor. Soft and floaty, with a wispy imagery and eerie wash of imagination.

Issued on the Inner Mystique LP and as a single by The Yo Yos.

The Uncharted Sea dotdotdotdot
Psychedelic (Instrumental)

"The Uncharted Sea" is another take of "Voyage Of The Trieste" that stands up well with the other. It was also a single from The Yo Yos.

Blue's Theme dotdotdotdot
Biker (Instrumental)

This is the Davie Allan and the Arrows' classic released under the name the Hogs, but of course it's the Chocolate Watchband. It's almost as fuzzy as Davie's original, and with Ed Cobb's wooden-malletted kick drum, it's pretty cool.
