Chachi, Boba Fett and the Wookiee - Radio Degobahdotdotdotdot
artworkYou might expect that this would be wimpy sci-fi fluff, but you'd be dead wrong. Chachi, Boba Fett, and the Wookiee are an instrumental trio formed by young punks in high school and off to college around the country when this was recorded. They have a rather edgy sound with a humorous attitude, blending their punk roots and some semi-obscure surf classics with their own compositions, plus original Star Wars poetry into a fabric of leathery texture. Their reformation of the Surftones' "Cecilia Ann" is nothing short of brilliant. This live set was recorded in The Pit by Uncle Al and me.

Track by Track Review

Nitro dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Chachi, Boba Fett and the Wookiee give a punishing punkoidal edge to Dick Dale's thrashing "Nitro." Flying fingers and pumping speaker cones. There's a slow break segment that interrupts the thrash. Damn, what energy!

Run To Redemption dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

High energy reverb against galloping drums and pumping bass. The melody line is intense and the gate fast, until the break launches them into a slowed and refined distant sludge. Yikes, what a cool track. I'm guessing about the title 'cuz Chachi Jones speaks so quickly.

Destination Degobah dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Destination Degobah" is pretty interesting. Super thrash, dissonant chords, power punk drums, dripping reverb and dark secrets. A big fuzz break trashes what's left of the daylight.

Pipeline dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Beginning with Chachi's 30 second double picked glissando, the Chantays' ultimate surf classic "Pipeline" suddenly becomes synonymous with dark rhythmic thrash. many trad elements are merged with hard driving guitar and power. The break is ultra restrained, but that is just a lull in the action. The last verse is fast and furious with fuzz lead. Amazing!

Moneypenny's Revenge dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Liquid vibrato twang and big chord thrash over a punk rhythm section, interrupted for damped reverbed bridges and flying glissandoes. Angular and punkoidal.

Intoxica dotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

With the energy of the Apemen and the drive of Black Flag, Chachi, Boba Fett and the Wookiee and make hay with this classic Neil Nissensen tune that so many vintage bands covered. Raging and loud for sure.

Slave One dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

"Say One" is an intense surf thrash exercise, very punk in nature and hard driving. Angular, intense, and largely aggressive, this alternates between power thrash and funky softness, even with a bass solo and some funky damped slow-wah guitar chops. Very interesting.

Serving Soviet dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

M.I.R.V.'s "Serving Soviet" is only slightly moved off center. Big crunch and punkin' percussion, distortion alternating with reverb, and rock solid bass. Thrashing power might be the best descriptor.

Crazy Horse dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Bang, crash, big twang, monster glissando, huge damped pluckabilly, almost Mermenish chord twang, bass and delicate dribbling guitar duet, and many changes. This is a really cool and unique song. Racing angry surf thrash and monster power.

Cecilia Ann dotdotdotdotdot
Pure Evil Love Surf (Instrumental)

The Surftones cut this initially. I lay unreleased for 30 years until appearing on Surf Legends and Rumors. The Pixies pop-punked it to broad acclaim. Then came Chachi, Boba Fett and the Wookiee with their intensely powerful majorly distorted reworking. This is a monster, from the confident pronouncement to the post assault description. Intending to surf the center section, the fuzz was accidentally left on. The result is pure annihilation!

Oda To Yoda (Star Wars Poetry) dotdotdotdot
Pure Evil Love Surf (Vocal)

OK, this isn't an instro. It's not even a song. It IS a an original Star Wars poem from the jaw and pen of Chachi Jones. Yoda was the new character in the latest Star Wars epic, and Chachi felt the urge to immortalize him in rhyme. very cool!

Connery vs. Moore dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big drums open this spymaster's tale. The drums make it one powerful track as they roll and drive the snare like a rockabilly monster. The guitar relentless dribbles out a nasty run. Punkin' and thumpin' surf slam.

Miserlou Stew dotdotdotdot
Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is a blending of "Miserlou" and "Wipe Out" played with grins and aggression. Much too fun to keep under wraps.

Rincon dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A slippery glissando slither guitar line drags a wandering surfer into a cautious search for surf, but the intense ultra trash fuzz punk assault that follows is no trad exercise. Pumped is an understatement.

Westward Expansion dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Argumentative, hard to control, split personality, surf and slam trade offs, and intense drive. Angular and disquieting.

Hava Nagila dotdotdotdot
Aboriginal Surf (Instrumental)

"Hava Nagila" has not been handed this thrashy a treatment before. Definitely punk, certainly short board surf, and undoubtedly aggressive. It comes in two parts, separated by a soft solo guitar line. A total workout!
