The Bottle Ups - Boppalina Goes West and 3 Othersdotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a seven inch ep extracted in part from the lp of the same name, and featuring two otherwise unavailable tracks as well. The Bottle Ups were an exceptional Swedish band fronted by Robert Johnson (Punchdrunks). Cowboys on surfboards ride the trail hell bent for leather, romping on their trademark compressed vibrato guitar decay fading into throbbing feedback sound. This band ruled!
Picks: Boppalina Goes West, Herd Of Buffalo, Lonely Longhorned Skull, Rumble

Track by Track Review

Boppalina Goes West dotdotdotdot
Vibrato Cowpoke Surf (Instrumental)

The edgy guitar churns out an infectious melody line over a galloping beat, and displays a compressed and breathing vibrato at the trailing edges of the guitar lines. Chunky, spunky, and full throated.

Herd Of Buffalo dotdotdotdot
Vibrato Cowpoke Surf (Instrumental)

You could sum this track up by saying chunk, rhythm, vibrato, and intense edge, but you'd miss the cool riff and the cowboy beat. Link Wray drives a "Herd Of Buffalo" to Dodge City. Wonderful!

Lonely Longhorned Skull dotdotdotdotdot
Vibrato Cowpoke Surf (Instrumental)

Intensely vibrational surf whammy cactus adventure... "Lonely Longhorned Skull" is a grand track with a huge sound and great tom toms. The vibrato throb is relentless. Magnificent.

Rumble dotdotdotdot
Vibrato Cowpoke Surf (Instrumental)

A dark and brooding interpretation of Link Wray's signature tune. This throbs throughout, and is augmented with extra chord progressions, giving it a different and surreal feel. High powered stuff. The breathing of the compressed vibrato is so cool, and the super thick multi-guitar grinding fuzz towards the end just curls your hair! Wow!
