Track by Track Review

Driving Guitars dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

The Ventures' classic "Driving Guitars" opens the disc with fire and reverent style. Very Ventures like.

Obsession dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

This Latin MOR track is light weight and friendly, and sports some tasteful whammy. Nice track.

Ghetto Blaster dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Chunky gutty grumbly and verging on ugly, "Ghetto Blaster" doesn't feel like the ghetto, though there's a touch of War in the rhythm.

Adios dotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Latin fluff romance flows from every corner of this soft number. Pretty, but not memorable.

Rarity Break dotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Straight roots Chuck Berry-ish fifties rockin' intro fare. Too jammy, yet pretty fun.

The Sting dot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

The light weight piano hit is acoustically played on guitar. Smooth and fun as a backdrop, but not really interesting.

My Prayer dotdotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

A Davie Allan styled lead, chunky glissandos, Eddie Cochran's "Somethin' Else" riffs, and a Ventures feel. All that in one track. Pretty darn cool! It's the fifties doo-wop hit.

El Cholico dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Acoustic Latin romance, with a beautiful melody line. Quite pretty.

Rap City dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Sirens precede the Ventures' "Rap City." More or less straight, but with distortion and edge in lieu of surf reverb. Lots of energy and coolness.

Ebony dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Liquid guitar notes ring out a night time mood. Very pretty and smooth.

Panhandle Rag dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Bouncy country fun and rockin' fifties percussion. Big guitar rock in a boogie mode.

The Wick Wicker Cha Cha dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

A great melody line with Spanish drama written all over it. Infectious and fun.

Caravan dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Duke Ellington's wonderful "Caravan" gets the tribal drums and big whammy treatment. Very definitely cool, and intense too.

Rincon dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Surfable in the Paul Johnson vein, "Rincon" is a soft and moody look at the surf. melodic and endearing, with warmth and charm.

Innovation dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Twangster fun and bounce, in a light hearted setting. Infectious, but not really memorable.

It's Party Time dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Gutty and party funky cool in an undulating country sorta way. Bluesy and on the moonshine side of the aisle.

Anitra's Dance dotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Fast gypsy dance style in a nonintrusive way. Unlike some of their other gypsy tunes, this is not particularly commanding. Too soft maybe.

Rio Bravo dotdotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

This spaghetti western cowboy romp is peppered with gunshots and romps to a galloping beat. The melody is warm and cactus cool, like maybe the Shakin' Apostles or another Austin band might have written it. Very cool, and quite fun.

Walk Don't Run dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

This live take is a straight cut at the Ventures. Very well done, but not at all developed beyond the 1960 take. Still, it stands up to multiple listenings.

Bolero Gonzales dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Spanish themes and big guitar whammy set this up for enjoyment. "Bolero Gonzales" has a friendly melody line with sensual value and staying power.

Red Cloud dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

A quasi Bo Diddley beat drives this jammy guitar exercise. Kinda fun, but not memorable.

Spanish Fly dotdotdot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Romantic Latin visions of black lace and sunset sadness ooze from every corner of this very pretty track. Very smooth and enjoyable.

Pin Up Girl dot
Indo Rock (Instrumental)

Eighties rock guitar sound and a bit of whammy, plus a female chorus. Way too poppy for me.
