The Bitch Boys - ...In Heatdotdotdotdotdot
artworkThis may be one of the most consistent CD's I've heard in a long time. 20+ fine tracks, consistently mixed and performed, with strong writing and rhythms. This Slovenian band is bound to make their mark on the surf instro world. Tracks like "Sale's Melioration," "Surfin' Tide," "Theme From Otpisani," "Blejski Venek," "Skaw Boy," and their liquid covers of "Telstar" and "Paint It Black," are essential listening. What's more astonishing than their consistently good recording and playing is their superior writing and keen sense of arrangement. There's always something going, none of which is filler. The music is rhythmic, dynamic, richly arranged, and full of glorious surf reverb. Highly recommended.
Picks: Stalking Mermaid, Surfin' Tide, Wet Bikini, Road Racer, Sale's Melioration, David's Quest, (on the road with...) Wave Chasers, Waikiki Storm, Gargamel S. Track by Track Review

Stalking Mermaid dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A sample soft rocker fades in, but then the a classic reverb kick gives away the coming assault. Fast and fun, with speedy double picked leads on high registers over a nearly prancing rhythm track. Playful and sunny, and just like a topdown Saturday afternooner at Malibu. Excellent.

Surfin' Tide dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The waves lap the shore, the delicate damped reverb drips like rain into a barrel, the chords shimmer shallow whammy, presenting a dramatic herald to a really cool surf tune. Rich double picked guitar, glissandoes on fire, and a catchy melody line with an edge. A truly fine track.

Wet Bikini dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Aggressive and playful, "Wet Bikini" races and dances on tubular sunshine. Highly original, and maybe a little like the Evasions on double time. Shouts of "wet bikini" add period charm. A little thrashy, and very reverby.

Road Racer dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The bass line from "Cadillac" rumbles under a rhythmic vibrato infected riff rocker. The track works well, especially when the middle eastern melody arrives. It becomes infectious and friendly, and a fine example of tribal surf. A long sample about rock and roll turning teenagers into sex hungry werewolves introduces the track.

Sale's Melioration dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Apache" drums and a melody very similar to Richie Podolor's "Quiet Surf." This may borrow from other works, but it's very good. Dramatic, tribal and ringing with wet guitar work. Thoroughly cool!

David's Quest dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"David's Quest" flies along at a fast clip with no worries. All is bright and beautiful in the future when you listen to this infectious track. Strong and fun.

(on the road with...) Wave Chasers dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big and crunchy, raucous and edgy, this recut of "(on the road with...) Wave Chasers" is stronger, yet remains a fifties reverbed updated. The abundant reverb keeps it in the tube, and ends up satisfying.

Waikiki Storm dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a fun track, with a warm melody line and a ton of liquid reverb. With a sound and power similar to some of the Brainwashers' material, yet very much the Bitch Boys' own sound. This is an open road track for sure.

Gargamel S. T. dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Gargamel Slaci Tangice" uses surf as a platform to laugh and sparkle from. This fine track is happy and playful, and sports fine dribbling double picked leads and glissandoes, plus a pick slide or two for extra zip. Just plain fun, with excellent drums and rhythmic chunk highlighted in the mix, and liquid guitar too.

Theme From Otpisani dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ringing surf, rolling rhythms, sparkling tones, and a sparkling melody dance from your monitors as you dig "Theme From Otpisani." Occasionally thundering tom toms add a sense of drama, followed by fluid glissandoes. Infectious and enduring, and a bit on the dramatic side.

Amor dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Amor" is rhythm driven in an Austin kinda way, like an Aqua Velvets speedster with more reverb. Highly enjoyable and very cool.

Bitch Stomp dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Playing with fire, the boys launch into a reverby riff fest, with the two guitars dueling for dominance. The chaos of early versions is gone, but the manic nature remains. Lots of splash here, especially in the cool break.

Paint It Black dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" starts with a shimmering opener, and moves to a double picked power train delivery. Other covers have used killer assault (the Mermen) or intense twang (King Of Hawaii), where the Bitch Boys employ splash and fun. The addition of a the Godfather riff mid stream is way too cool. Dramatic and very surfy.

Blejski Venek dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a fine performance in the Super Stock's mold, but with creative license taken. Glissandoes pan across your consciousness. Rhythmic and pretty, and quite enjoyable. The guitar break is right outta "Cadillac," and is somehow quite appropriate. Infectious and fun. Also called "Blejski Wenc'k."

Shark Attack dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Thunder and vibrato shimmer, big reverb and rich textures, and drama with a capital D. Tribal in a dangerous way, throbbing with treachery, and thick. Quite effective!

My Bunny dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"My Bunny" rises slowly under a Slovenian narrative. Slow and island romantic, this ode to the saltwater curves of the softer sex drips with liquid reverb and slow whammy. Excellent!

Skawboy dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A little desert wind, a distant church bell, a delicately damp-picked intro gives way to a splashy spaghetti western melody over a flamenco rhythm that gradually goes faster and faster until double picking and glissandoes take over, transitioning into an almost Cossack sound. Ska rhythms are injected in the second half's slower part. Very interesting and cool.

Revenge Of the Amor dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Damped reverbed surf, double picked dribbles, flying glissandoes, and shimmering vibrato. "Revenge Of The Amor" is very friendly and fiery, with warm tone and a solid beat. Double picking delicately plays out a sunny dusk as long tubes roll past the point. Very good!

Suez Canal Affair dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A bass line opens as cautious shimmer and feedback slithers across sundown waterways. In the distance, fins and feminine forms... this is a really good track, with a pretty melody and very nice production. The midsection is a faster more rock thing with a strong rhythm that yields back to surf with a different feel. Excellent!

Telstar dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Joe Meek's "Telstar" is slowly poured from the guitar like wine from a gourd... well, at least until it becomes very Hawaiian at a more normal pace. Polished and liquid, it's a completely different treatment of this fine tune, which is normally thrashed and powered. In this arrangement, the polish and pure surf make it irresistible. Excellent arranging and performance!

Sale's Melioration dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This last track is uncredited and resides at the end of track 20. "Sale's Melioration" with male and female sex play sounds over the top - makes for an amusing end to an amazing CD.
