Robert Russell Bennett and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra (Richard Rogers) - Victory At Seadotdotdotdot
artworkNo, I haven't lost my marbles. They're still in my drawer. You see, before there was such a thing as surf music, before there was the guitar glissando simulating the crashing of a wave, there was the swell of the angry sea captured full force in the opening orchestral glissando of the theme from the classic television World War II documentary series Victory At Sea, which was on regularly at home when I was a kid. That powerful music was remarkable. It set the stage for the sound of the surf to come. So, even though there are no guitars, no electric bass, and only kettle drums and occasional military snare, this comes as a highly recommended primer for the setting of the stage for surf, and an all around incredibly powerful bit of music. It is available in two forms, original stereo, and reformulated via Surround Sound ®. Richard Rogers wrote this incredible music, and the recording is from the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra led by Robert Russell Bennett. The performance is masterful, emotional, and all powerful. The writing is simply perfect. There are also numerous followup volumes containing even more tracks from the classic TV series.
Picks: The Song Of The High Seas, The Pacific Boils Over, Guadalcanal March, D-Day, Hard Work And Horse Play, Theme Of The Fast Carriers, Beneath The Southern Cross, Mare Nostrum, Victory At Sea, Fire On The Waters, Danger Down Deep, Mediterranean Mosaic, The Magnetic North

The Song Of The High Seas dotdotdotdotdot
Orchestral War Surf (Instrumental)

This is the opening theme. It is huge, powerful, and defined the aquatic power of the glissando, setting the stage for it's use in surf music five years later. The imagery is unavoidable. The cold Atlantic, with its choppy swells, immediately invades your mind's eye. As the high seas subside, the moodiness of a tentative peace on the waves is visible delivered with the moving and ominous sounds of the dark just over the horizon. This is simply the best orchestral side trip you can take that relates to surf music in a fundamental way.
