The Beat Poets - If You Know Your Historydotdotdotdot
An excellent band with textured chunk power and a powerful live persona. This cassette sorta sums up the rest of the Beat Poets, from unreleased studio sessions to live BBC performances. The absolute highlight for me was the exceptional merging of "Little Drummer Boy" and "Miserlou," both played with great double picked guitar and groovy horns.

John Sinclair dotdotdot
Scottish Surf (Instrumental)

Big guitar churn and chunk instrumental power, with more progression than melody, and more punch than rhythm. It's well appreciated by the BBC studio audience. Live on BBC Scotland, May 20, 1994.

Portobello dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

A cool gutty sound with horns greats you when you absorb Scotland's Beat Poets. It's like Wilson Picket's back-up band gone surfin'.

Three Lane Blacktop dotdotdot
Scottish Surf (Instrumental)

This track is a smooth blend of jammin' suave, like jazzy guitar and playful rhythms. The horn section is in fine form, full almost to the point of being orchestral. Studio May 1994

Corfu Casino dotdotdot
Scottish Surf (Instrumental)

Well, this is a mighty pretty piece. "Corfu Casino"is a melodic and wintery track with a moody feel and a smooth edge. Studio May 1994

Little Drummer Boy / Miserlou dotdotdotdotdot
Scottish Holiday Surf (Instrumental)

Honky interpretation of the holiday classic, with wild drums and surf undertow. Glissandoes and a surf beat. A nasty sax and a double picked guitar ride the ten foot faces of Glasgow. The Beat Poets use the mid section from "Miserlou" to separate several verses. Entirely cool! Live BBC Scotland Dec 1996

Silent Night dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Yikes! Very cool super chunk version of the Yule classico, given new life with edgie guitar, jangly bells, and a baritone sax and a trumpet that would give Dick Dale inspiration. It's amazing what a large band can do for rock and roll when it's not in the hands of CTA or Lawrence Welk. Give me more.

Omelets dotdotdot
Scottish Surf (Instrumental)

This is one groovin' number with the boys discussing their omelets while soul groovin'. Pretty cool. Studio 1993

There's Always Another Windmill dotdotdotdot
Scottish Surf (Instrumental)

This excellent demo tune is smooth and soulful, watery and picturesque. The bass lines are very fine under the sustained edge and polished guitar. It's more a progression in sound and feel than melodic, slightly psychedelic and certainly trance inducing. Nice. 4 Track June 1998
