The Beat Poets - Totally Radiodotdotdot
artworkThis is a very solid album from Scotland's Beat Poets. From the ashes of the incredible Primevals, comes this wonderful lyric free band, with a focus on surf filtered through a Stax-Volt sensibility, and a driven rhythmic style hinting of the Pachuko Soul of the great east side bands of the sixties.

Track by Track Review

Surfin' Angel dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Strong, garage edged instrumental pound, edgie guitar backed by the loving Poet-horns. This tune relies on an infectious progression, and soulful energy. It is thumpy and must be a dance groove dictator live.

Surf's Up dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Evil sax and smooth surf guitar lines. Some kinda surf flow here... it reminds me a bit of GT Stringer. It's smooth R&B baseline, and it's dark storm surf feel give it an infectious edge.

Hotfire dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Like the soul groove of an Austin band strained through the Stax-Volt sensibilities, with clear and present Surf-N-Soul (Pachuko Soul) sounds. This fine track is infectious and relentlessly moving.

I'm Branded dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Link Wray's garage monster, deliberately funked and grooved, with amazing effect. I usually fine covers of this tune to be fairly uninteresting, but this is very fresh, like James Brown on a classic Dewey Webber, or something. Raw guitar tones, and thump galore.

Killer Bee Honey dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

A sax lead tune with surf guitar playing a cool jazzy rhythm bed. I never realized how Johnny & the Hurricanes this was until just now. :-}

Jack Ruby dotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

A sax R&B raver utilizing a basic progression like many of the fifties R&B acts employed.

Exterminator dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Evil sax over ominous shrill feedback and poundy drums. Really cool tune. It may be repetitious, but it's mean and oh-so COOL!

Horse dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

A Peter Gunn / B-52's intro misleads you into an expectation that is both dashed and surpassed. This funky and rhythmic track is a mean soulful groove, a meander through the Otis Redding school of edge and power, and a dark journey through the gray chop of gloomy storm surf. Pumped and beat driven.

Chinese Algebra dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

The title alone should create an interest in this track. It seems at odds with itself - an oxymoron. The fade in beginning brings forth a funky and rhythmic track of watery soul, with the dance floor full and the wetsuits in the corner. The sax lead is playful and suave, in a red light district club way. This is principally beat dominated, progression driven, and relentlessly fun. It's also live.

Italian Modal Hip dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Like alligator shoes and white sport coats, this seems to play with your mind, like a precursor to the Baronics first CD with a Memphis horn section added. It's classical, it's soulful, and it's very infectious and playful.

Introducing... dotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

With a fine guitar line-hook and raw sax leads, and thundering drum solo breaks, this is like Wipe Out at the Stax-Volt studios. Fine surf based soul funk groove.

Rocket 90 dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

Thumpy pumped groove suave, like the new Pacific Northwest imitators would like to produce. Many of the elements here remind of the Viceroys or one of their contemporaries, soul based twang and funk raw instro joy. Fine track.

Rebel Surf dotdotdotdot
Surf-N-Soul Groove (Instrumental)

With a guitar line reminiscent of What Ever Happened To Eddie, and dark sax melody lines, this is a perfect track to run under a surf video about huge waves and bad wipe outs. A big day at Waimea after a tsunami. Funky, but mostly Link Wray and surf centered. A fine track for sure.
