Bay Of Pigs - Surfin' Missile Crisisdotdotdotdot
artworkBay Of Pigs play with an original spin of surf, both aurally and structurally. While not too far afield, their sound is fresh, and the playing really good. Refreshing and well worth seeking out.

Track by Track Review

Escape From 1027 dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Whammy chords ominously present a mid tempo melody with mystery and danger. The, as the song picks up speed, a Slacktone-ish melody takes hold. Spunky and double picked, with fast glissandos, "Escape From 1027" is a splendid track with tortured guitar and a solid rhythm section. Intense!

Eraser Head dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Borrowing general patterns and intensity from The Penetrators' "Redlined," or perhaps Armageddon's "Buzzard," this song rips with power and speed. Whammy chords give it slither. A very cool track.

Retribution dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Retribution" is a fairly fast track with fine guitar work and power drums. The bass supports all the action in a deceptively subtle fashion. Lots of energy here.

Brown Cord dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A really fine, barely controlled riff and chop chords are more of a workout than melody, but its drive and splash seem to make that not matter. Wholly original and fun, and slightly reminiscent of The Bitch Boys.

Swedish Meatball dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big splash and flash, coupled with whammy and thick delay create a heavy energy blend. "Swedish Meatball" seems more jammy than most surf instros, but it's a great ride nonetheless.

Bringin' Home The Bacon dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Cool muted chop chords and a Slacktone-ish Mexican-flavored melody deliver substantial pleasure. Plenty if cool jive and whammy here, folks. "Bringin' Home The Bacon" is just a fun track with ample changes and slither.

Enchantment dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Enchantment" is an easy moving track with a demented organ warble and spooky sound. It seems more disturbed than enchanted, but that aside, it's original and sports a nice melody. Too fun!

Knotty Pine dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Knotty Pine" has a sound that transcends The Penetrators and LA nineties surf. A bit growly, with double picked verses and interesting progressions. It's not exactly melodic in the you-can-hum-it sense, but it's compelling and entertaining.

Bullwhip dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Mid tempo twang with a rock solid beat and bass line. "Bullwhip" sneaks up on you, initially seeming kind of middling, but soon enough it has your full attention. The shimmering keyboard chords are subdues and haunting. A fine track!

Rickshaw dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Frantic percussion and in-sync glissandos launch the song, and then a tangentially stereotypical Asian theme evolves. That does not mean it's derivative or even similar to other such tracks, but rather that there is that kind of influence. Lots of cool things happening here.

Wonder Bread Woman dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A bit of Middle Eastern influence, and stinging whammy chords, along with a very cool rhythm section, present a thick splash with more sting than melodic sense. "Wonder Bread Woman" has flair and is infectious at times. Lots of surfisms. The bridge slows to a shimmering whammy torture with moody bass and very cool chip chords. Quite inventive.

Catsack dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Playful and slithery, with liquid guitar and charm. "Catsack" is certainly more fun than artful, and in this case, that is a compliment. Very entertaining!

Revenge Of The Sea dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The sea laps at the shore gently before the thick, layered delay guitar washes over everything. "Revenge Of The Sea" is a medium paced number with lots of guitaristry riding above a very solid rhythm section. Whammy dips, and thick delay spread.
