The Barbarians - Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girldotdotdot
artworkThe Barbarians were from Provincetown, Massachusetts. They are most famous for drummer Victor "Moulty" Moulton, who kept time despite the hook that replaced his left hand. The story of his hook is immortalized in their epic tune "Moulty", narrated by Moulty himself over the backtrack structure of the Jaguars' (San Jose) "You'll Turn Away". It's so mushy, it almost brings a flood of "open manly weeping" (Brian Poole's term). Their pouty approach to pop epitomizes the sixties garage pop sound. They also did a couple of nice instrumentals. This CD gathers their primary output. Unlike the One Way release, this is crisp and clean.
Picks: Maria Elana, Linguica

Maria Elana dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Maria Elena" is a pleasant solo guitar journey into the mind of instrumental Moulty...or Los Indios Tabajarasminus the lounge.

Linguica dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A post-surf (un-reverbed) tune that should have been written several years earlier and surfed up mightily. Good listening.
