Ava Kant - Highwave Stardotdotdot
artworkAva Kant write really well, and play hard driving music born of tradition merged with the modern trends in surf. I like what they are doing. Strong surf instros presented in a less than optimal manner. It's not really lo-fi, just sub-optimal.

Track by Track Review

Davie The Fuzzed dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Motorcycle raspy engine and fast double picked led with grating fuzz guitar, and pumped bass and drums. "Davie The Fuzzed" flies high in a lo-fi power sort of way. The melody is strong and fairly traditional, and the fuzz adds Davie Allan grit.

Buste Gialle dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is both playful and powerful. Cycling riffs and thunder below drive "Buste Gialle" hard. Plenty of thrust and staying power.

Lady Seagull dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Delicate surf with a fluid melody and power edge. "Lady Seagull" features a normal surf beat, booming bass, and whammy chords. Not gentle, but pretty in places nonetheless.

Play It Again, Tony dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tribal drums and shimmer, a cool for cats feel, and a walking bass line. Gritty at times, but mostly on the jazzy detective side. You can see a small smoky club late at night as you listen to the jive.

Highwave Star dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Double picked guitar plays against hippy wah wah in the intro. The double picked melody is very good. "Highwave Star" has surf sparkle and psychedelic weirdness, along with very gritty fuzz. Nice track.

Pissing Man dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tribal drums rock the planet as "Pissing Man" plays out. A very serviceable riff delivered over throbbing bass. While relentlessly powerful, this is less memorable than many here.

Bucatini dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Psycho wah wah, dark fuzz, and surf guitar play a lumbering number with boom and streetlight danger. "Bucatini" is an interesting composition, and sports some tasteful drums.

Ava Radio dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Ava Radio" meanders in and out of various songs segmented by tuning and announcements. It's certainly a radio wannabe.
