The Akulas - The Akulas EPdotdot
artworkThe Akulas EP suffers from very poorly mapped mixing, and is light on melody to boot. Better production values would help a lot, but with so much emphasis on progressions instead of melody, and over bearing organ, I found this really hard to pay attention to.
Picks: none

Track by Track Review

Gerade Aus dot
Surf (Instrumental)

There's just nothing here to capture your imagination. "Gerade Aus" is fundamentally a riff rock number with organ and reverb rhythm. No melody, and nothing original or charming to overcome the backtrack only structure.

Telstar dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Tornados' "Telstar" is done with guitar hard right and organ hard left. This results in the guitar being too subdued in the mix to really make this work. It doesn't help that the organ is Leslie rather than grode as in the original. Some very nice double picking towards the end.

Mary Lou dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slow and structured like a fifties romancer, with surf guitar and over bearing organ. Despite some tasty dribbling double picking in the break, "Mary Lou" really does nothing for me.

Our Man Flint dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Elliott Fisher's cheesy spy theme is reasonably done. The harsh panning on guitar and organ leaves the focus of the track, the melody, basically stranded on the right. Some fine drumming though.

Kosmonauti dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Middle Eastern introduction, infectious ska rhythms, and a cheesy organ melody. While fun and infectious at times, "Kosmonauti" feels really under developed. Perhaps it the ineffective mix.
