Agent Orange - Surfin' The Pitdotdotdotdotdot
artworkThis CD-R was written for on-air use from a special instrumental surf performance Agent Orange delivered on Surf's Up in early 1997. They were scheduled to play at Berkeley Square, but it had closed down for the fifth time, and Mike Palm was horse with a cold. He had promised for years to do an instro show for us, and the convergence of their show in San Jose and Mike's loss of voice was too much to resist. Sam Bolle and Dusty Watson backed Mike to the hilt, and the trio delivered some huge surf instros as only Agent Orange can.

Track by Track Review

Pipeline dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Agent Orange usually opens their live sets with their signature interpretation of the Chantays' "Pipeline." It's smoother but as aggressive as the version on the Bitchin' Summer ep. Way cool!

Untitled dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

I recognize the melody, but can't place the title on this one. Melodic and fluid, this sports mighty power, fluid effects, and a smooth lead guitar with tone borrowed from their Posh Boy days. Very cool.

Journey To The Stars dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This Ventures classic becomes a larger than life adventure in hyper space at the hands of these three demons of surf punk. Aggressive and rough textured, "Journey To The Stars" rocks mightily.

Tiki Ti dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is an original Agent Orange instrumental, with a catchy melody riff and infectious energy. Not as punky as most of their instros, "Tiki Ti" is optimistic and the guitar is much less edgy. Very cool track.

Japanese Title dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is a Yuzo Kayama song, edged out and amped up. Mike didn't know the name of it 'cuz the release he heard it from is all in Japanese. Riff rockin' fun, infectious lines, and lotsa energy. Damn cool track.

Exotic dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Bruce Morgan's "Exotic" is A-number one powerful. I'm sure he had no idea when he wrote this that Agent Orange would take it to such extreme heights! Amped and driven really hard!

Bite The Hand That Feeds dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

"Bite The Hand That Feeds" defines the surf punk genre. It is an original composition that displays all the spunk and edge that is Agent Orange. It is a progression based, intensely energetic assault. It demands attention, and commands respect. Chunky, compressed, powerful.

Good Cop, Bad Cop dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is a mighty gnarly interpretation of "Good Cop Bad Cop." It's way bigger than the Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet original, mean, aggressive, and intense.

Penetration dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Even ultra familiar classics like the Pyramids' "Penetration" takes on new meaning under the power and aggression of Agent Orange. This purely rocks!

Cyanide Junkie dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is an interesting vehicle for Agent Orange. The long chords and hooky riff go the heart of space-spy surf. The arrangement is significantly different from the Spies Who Surf original, but doesn't deviate so much that the nod to the source is lost. very nice track.

Fadeaway dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Agent Orange does a stunningly suave version of this very pretty Laika and the Cosmonauts tune. Beautiful chords, glorious tone, and perfect meter. This arrangement is much rounder and more surfy than the Finlanders did it, and it makes it so much more like a Polynesian holiday.

Miserlou dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Now, this is classic Bitchin' Summer Agent Orange! Aggressive, chunky, damped punk, with major energy and power. The double picking is very good, as is the rhythm section. Yeow!

Twitchin' dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

This is a mighty crunchy performance of Steve Soest's (Torquays/Dick Dale) infectious instro. Totally fun and upbeat.

Skinny Dip dotdotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Agent Orange covered the Halibuts' "Skinny Dip" on an orange vinyl seven inch a decade ago. This performance is easily as strong, and with the catchy melody line powered up like this, it's a grinding punkoidal power monster.

Tidal Wave dotdotdotdot
Power Punk Surf (Instrumental)

Opening the short set is a firebrand performance of Dave Wronski's "Tidal Wave." It's a lot edgier than the version they did one year later, and is packed with classic Agent Orange sounds.
